Repelling Insects

With summer vastly approaching and those pesky mosquitoes starting to think about coming out, what is the best way to repel insects from your boat. I have mosquito netting and what not, but on nice summer nights, it would be nice to sit out in the cockpit.

Try Citronella candles, and use citron soap. A yeast tablet a day will not stop them biting but they will immediately withdraw the probiscus because of the taste(it's the coagulant they inject after feeding that causes the itch/swelling. If bitten, swab with vinegar to take the itching away and reduce swelling.
It does to a part depend on your diet and of course different bodies have different attractions, pink fresh tourists seem to be a favourite mossie target.
Try all these to choose which suits you best.

Screens, and a breeze !! and some repellent if ya want. We use Amber Romance from Victoria Secrets, smells sorta like a French House of Ill repute, but the skeetas and no see ems hate the stuff!! The Inshore oil rig guys buy it by the case !! It works!!

Can I take my yeast in draught beer and vegemite form rather than as a tablet? Will it still work?

Using yeast/brewers yeast/marmite/vegemite to repel mossies is a myth. I've just done a google search and there was not one item that supported the claim that yeast is effective.

You're better off using DEET, mosquito nets and citronella candles.

If you want to avoid (or at least, minimize) the amount of chemicals your body is exposed to, you can try "parakito", it is a French made natural mosquito repellent made of several different essential oils. It has worked fairly well for us, especially with our youngest child. We like the fact it's not in contact with the skin. (I think they are sold in the US, Para'Kito )

Try not to exhale as much as the boat next door. It's your Co2 thats attracting them. Though some people claim higher levels of vitamin B will reduce the incidence of bites.

I don't think there is anything that can stop them. I am a favorite target for those buggers. I use citronella oil, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil; alternating them day to day. Put in my hair(lightly), on ears , back of neck etc. oh n sometimes lavender.

One of those little fabric softener sheets stuck in a shirt pocket will help keep no-seeums away.

Currently on the Columbia River, I run 2 bug zapper lights, one on the bow and one on the stern. I got them on ebay for about $75 each. At high bug times, these seem to draw the bugs just to the light. So when on deck they just seem to fly by people on deck on their way to the zapper. When mosquitos are out, there is a specific bait that goes in the light base. Often, after running all night, there will be a small pile of dead bugs under the lights. However, if the constant zapping sound bothers you, this may not be your solution. I have a larger inverter and battery bank, so can run the lights and other items at anchor.
