Re: Reading Grib files

Are you asking about the software or how to interpret what is on the screen?

The basic information

1) Wind barbs

Low pressure systems rotate counterclockwise, High pressure systems rotate clockwise IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.

2) Isobars - line showing equal barometric pressure. The closer they are together, the more intense the system - much like contours on a chart.

3) Precipitation

I use that to show where the fronts are likely to be. Fronts are drawn in by a person on a weatherfax.

When using uGrib which is about the simplistic reader the wind speed and direction, BP and precipitation are shown for the cursor location.

A great resource for understanding weather products is

http://www.opc.ncep.noaa.gov/UsersGuide/UG.pdf

Is that enough to get started?

Jack
