Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
Seems like there are quite a few 30-40'+ boats that could be purchased for $1 - $5,000..
I'm talking more about those who have purchased the boat just put on a mooring or at anchor and rarely if ever move the boat.
Has anyone here done this?
Or know someone who has?

Re: Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
Well.... many of us have purchased project/bargain boats and fixed them up. It's a long tedious job with a lot of time involved instead of sailing. You become a boat worker instead of having fun on the water sailing. And I'm talking about boats that were not $5000, but 10 times that. Key expensive things are:
Tanks under floors or buried away that leak. ?- $3000
Sails $10000-$20000
Engines $15000- 20000
Hull and deck wetness or blisters. $5000-$25000
ELectronics $1000-$5000
In the end I guess it's up to what you are willing to invest and live with in the end. You might find used sails that will work but are not the right size etc etc.
In the end "There is no such thing as a free boat". Or: "the most expensive boat is a free one"
The best bargain is a boat that someone made the mistake of getting very cheap, put $50-100K into and now has to sell at a big loss. Don't be that guy, be the next owner.

Sounds like OP is not talking about fixing the cheap klunker up, nor even going out on the water, but just parking it and using it as as a cheap place to live.
And yes, many do just that, but are not encouraged much by the actual sailing community, and fewer marinas will allow it as time goes on.

The Florida keys were full of boats just like what the OP was referring to.

Re: Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
Yes this exactly.
Buy boat.
Put on a ball or put the anchor done and move every few months a short distance or never move at all..
I see a ton of boats in the Miami area and in the Florida Keys that look like they never move.
Not saying this is something I want to do, was just curious on if anyone here has done it or is doing it now?

Many years ago, one of our slip-mates was a young single Attorney.
We noticed after a while he never seemed to go out.
I got nosy and asked when he was going to head out. The reply was simple,'When he got an engine!"
He had an old 35' Bertram. He had it towed in and out and figured it was cheap rent for an ocean front condo!

Saw an eBay ad for a 35' O'Day in awful shape, but included an ongoing berth lease off Manhattan for $400 a month.
Sold in a few hours.

I've met a few as well who live in marinas without any engines at all.
Could make a lot of sense considering the situation.

I was told by someone that worked at the plant that Hatteras actually sold boats without engines, were meant to be Marina beach houses.
Hatteras was not a cheap boat, and these were new boats too.

Re: Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
I have heard that there are a few individuals that sell the floating junk boats in the Keys and other places, and I’d bet even some are rented out like cheap apartments.
After the storm the actual owner is very hard to determine, cause sometimes it’s not the person living on the boat.
I have no experience, but bet that there are some unscrupulous buying and selling of these boats.

You might want to research about all the strife and angst -- and sometimes city or other local laws, or attempts to create same -- in Florida caused by long-term anchoring bazillions of boats in various condition. Draw your own conclusions about how viable it might be...

Re: Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
To the point that I believe abandoning a boat is now a serious crime there.
Disposal costs are very high, and taxpayers should not be expected to foot the bill.
But none of this applies to a responsible citizen who wants to live at low cost on the docks near Chicago.
Perfectly sound plan, but make sure to plan for winter, brrrrr

Re: Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
I'm not personally looking for the cheapest boat possible but I thought it was a valid topic I'm curious about..
I have been trying to research on living on the hook in the Miami area, even posted about it a few weeks ago and didn't get any replies:

Re: Purchasing the largest and cheapest boat just for mooring / anchoring?
Hundreds of people do it in South Florida and they are the scorn of law enforcement, local businesses and active boaters with seaworthy boats.
Good luck.
