After being fed up with the buggy, bloated HP printer drivers we bought a low end Canon. This one works a treat.

We use the HP Officejet H470 on our boat. Very compact and we ordered the optional leather 'sleeve' that protects it while not in use. Frequently, when we have visitors aboard, we'll take their picture and print it out as a gift to them. Many have commented that it's a nice touch.

i used to use one but when it dcided to refuse to work i just let it go--havent needed one --even for boarding passes for flying out to places i visit---i will not have another....donot need it--i get decent weather from other sources than weather fax...and more easily......and just as fast..

I went to the printer cartridge people that service my work printers and found that Brother seemed to have the best replacement cartridge arrangements (at least here in Hobart) as many printers have microchipped cartridges that cost $$$. Its the consumables that make the cost of ownership prohibitive!! The printer has a front panel and is easily accessible in a shelf (strapped in for sea!) and though not an ultra compact (these all seemed to have expensive and small cartridges), it had large ink cartridges (with liquid ink) and I am very happy with it.

Yes, I lost my dog once and the only thing the Police found was a printer cartridge....

We used to keep a small HP printer on board, but I found that, as MarkJ suggested, I can use my digital camera to make a copy of any page on my laptop. Since that discovery I've ditched the printer. 'take care and joy, Aythya crew

I have had a Brother MFN465cn multifunction on board for the last two years and it has served us well for a 90$ printer.

if you have internet access to download maintenance info etc.., you can print it for later use etc... the copy feature, my wife would not be without it to copy all those recipes from everyone else in port.. I have never used the fax function to date.

My boat is now in a warehouse and I bring the printer home for the winter.

In the Eastern Carribean the humidity is high. After talking to other cruisers I decided to get a small laser printer. I don't use it often but it is handy when I need it. Toner done not dry out like ink jets and the cost was under $60. When stored I keep it in a Ziplock bag. This season will be my third year.

The downside is black and white only and no scanner. The upside is copies that are smearproof and not having to worry about ink. I should get annother 2500 copies before I need a new toner cartridge. That will be at laest another 5 years.

If you just want a compact printer with no scanner or fax capabilities, take a look at the Canon i70. It operates on 120 VAC, but also comes with an optional battery capability.

I had one for travel when I was working, and it was small enough to fit in my briefcase. Does a nice printing job, too. It's great on the boat for printing weather faxes, email or crew lists for clearing in.

I thought as much and went searching for the right laser printer. Didn't think I'd found it, along with not real needing one right now, I put this on the back burner. Hopefully when I need one they will be smaller.
What model did you get?

Thanks for all the great responses, both pro and con. Really appreciate it. I decided that for $31.99, it was worth a try. If it doesn't work out or craps out early, I'll not have put a lot into it. My current HP Photosmart printer has been very dependable, but then again, it's in a house, not a boat!

I got the HP laserjet 1018 at Staples in Toronto. It was discounted since new models were being released. It was quite small for the time and as you say hopefully they willbe smaller when you need one.
