Re: Personal Liability Insurance

She should be able to get an Umbrella Policy, for having a car insurance; with the same issuer, of course.

Her umbrella would not attach it to a car policy...which I don't understand...

However...several people have stated that small agencies have access to writing it "on a person"...then the umbrella can be reobtained.

There is personal property insurance for issues like this...but no luck finding a company that will do it with only an auto policy.
Well, no lawyer is going to take a case against someone who has no assets. It is a waste of time for the lawyer. Your girlfriend does not need insurance. Save the money.

Sounds like people have gotten these type policies...just haven't found the right company yet I guess.

I have had several responses, even from an insurance guy< who says it can be done.
In a case like that the old lady's lawyer sues the supermarket, not your girlfriend.
Is she accident prone or really unlucky or what?

Really? Who says??? ...like me... maybe she has a couple mil in the bank?

Just cause you don't have a house or apartment...doesn't mean you don't have assets.....

I haven't read the other posts but we have an umbrella policy and car insurance without property insurance. However, we do have renters insurance to cover the stuff inside the boat that the marine insurance doesn't. Maybe that is how we are able to get it but I don't think so because that was an after thought.

Anyway we have Allstate Insurance.

Despise that arguing of minute semantics of a broad topic that is so prevalent on CF.

Seriously, it was a simple question directed at people who have experience.

WHO CARES WHY!?!? It's seriously not the concern of any of you.

All you boring armchair losers do is distract from the intent of the OP and bring down the 'QUALITY' of CF, it's resources and it's community.

Seems like nothing but a bunch of old farts with nothing better to do. "Get off my lawn dang youngins"

Get a life people. Either help OPs or don't reply.

How come your salary wouldn't be the insurable interest you don't want to see garnished?

I know you can get specific personal liability policies. I used to have one at work for if I got sued, that was not attached to any property.

Re: Personal Liability Insurance

First she has to have something that is worth suing for. If she has no personal value/wealth, its doubtful someone is going to pay to sue her. We looked at additional personal liability insurance. Being our driving records is not that great we were declined. So we opened an irrevocable and revocable trust and transfer most of our stuff into the trusts. So now on paper we are homeless and broke. So if somebody wants to sue us good luck.

Anyway, if she does not have any value, there is nothing to sue for, so why does she want insruance?

Re: Personal Liability Insurance

This is a good topic, but it would seem to me not much insurance would be sold if your loophole worked.

Perhaps they would just garnish any distributions you took from your trust so it would basically be off limits or anyone. I'm no lawyer, but would be interested to know more.

Re: Personal Liability Insurance

The devil is in the details...Make sure your name is misspelled on anything you own, by a letter or two! For example, let's say your name is Normann Fruitcake...let the official records show a typo...Norman Fruiticake. This will drive search computers like crazy; basically, your properties under your real name do not exist. That's all folks!

The issue of insurable interest doesn't apply to liability insurance...

It is underwritten on quantifiable risk and provable assets

Many companies will issue it along with a renters' policy and you can get a renters' policy on a storage unit

The umbrella policies will extend underlying coverage but not cover areas not covered by primary insurance until the deductible is met, in my case 500k

Also, if she were a part owner of the boat some companies will write personal liability coverage on a yacht (quartermaster, jack line, etc) and that can be extended by an umbrella...

Did this for a living for a long time... Don't miss it but do understand it.

Scott
