I'm wondering what has replaced a thumb drive for an easy to carry way of data storage, usable in most devices?

Yes, I do look at old photos. The screensaver and slideshow features of all computers is very handy for this. I have a ton of old photos. The paper ones I should go through and scan the keepers in, have done some recently. The rest can get trashed. The ones i really feel bad about are the &^%@#*&(^%$#@ SLIDES. What a dumb idea they were, although the concept was great: BIG. Computer screens do that now.

I have many of my Fathers old slides, deal with slides were they were much higher resolution.
What I would like to find is the old 16mm film they made diving in the early 50's, when a lot of gear was home made.
He bought the camera and its custom made case down in the keys from the guy who had the tonight show before Johnny Carson.
I remember pictures of " sleeping sharks" decades before Jacques Cousteau discovered them

I would like to get our pictures and slides converted to digital format, just do you have to send it off, and what does it cost?

If you can get a hold of an older Cannon scanner you can do through it's special plastic attachment specifically for slides and/or negatives. It does a bunch of them at once (as many slides as would fit into 8X11 space) so it's less time consuming than one would expect.

The problem with memory sticks is they are not very reliable, and easy to lose.

And they are too small to store significant volumes of data including movies (even your own videos), and music.

I have a 2TB freestanding hard drive connected to my boat's wifi router, configured as a media server. No problem using it in the middle of the ocean. Cost less than $100.

If it helps, in addition to sites like Craig's List, there are ones which simply help your currently unloved possessions find new owners to love them, sans any currency changing hands. It's called FreeCycling

But as to your them, yep, I hear you. The diseases of the land are some awful ones. In particular, unlike when living on a boat, & prior to buying something, you fall out of the habit of asking yourself: "So if I buy this, where onboard will I stow it? And what kind of upkeep (including tools & spares to facilitate same) will it require"?

My old thumb drives live with my old floppy disks and 8 track tapes. In a landfill somewhere

Just bought 9 more last week ( el cheapo 8GB in packs of 3).

I use them all the time for installing applications, backing up databases, passing large data files around etc.

(not all of us are permanently connected to cheap fast intertubes )

I have a negative scanner that scans both slides and 35mm negs. takes a little while but it scans them in at 12mB. Thses scanners have gotten cheaper and I expect you could buy one in the states for a couple hundred dollars. Otherwise there is a store nearby me that will scan fo 15 cents per scan (cheaper if you bring a bunch)

My old (10+ years old) Cannon 8400 does all of that. I have picked it up years ago at a Goodwill store for under $10. Not lighting fast nor compact by today's standards but at this price I don't care. All the tech info including the manual is online at their website and it's a one click operation for most of its settings.

Also a semi-pro photographer acquaintance uses this thingy when a scanner is not available or the item photographed is not conducive to be scanned. Given today's resolution of digital cameras and phones will probably make as good of a picture as any old scanner.
