Part Time Cruising FLA vs BVI

Good day! Soo close to purchasing our 42'-44' cat and hoping to be on board this winter. We're trying to decide on which location is more cost effective (think we may know the answer here). We currently live in New England and will head south for the cold months. Thinking of keeping the boat in the BVI's or St. Thomas year round, for approx. 4 - 5 months of intermittent cruising broken down into 2 trips (flying). We've also considered FLA Gulf coast but assume Virgin Islands would be cheaper? Any idea of what numbers to expect for marina costs in these 3 locations?

I would guess the opposite.

Obviously, it's site specific (what size boat, marina location, marina amenities, etc....) but flights inside the USA will typically be cheaper and you have the option to drive down if you want to pick up stuff for the boat, plus you have a car available. There are just going to be more marinas available to compete for your buisness on the gulf coast.

Of course they are drastically different cruising grounds and in the dead of winter the islands will likely be much more pleasent than the gulf coast (where on the gulf coast by the way as there are a lot of miles of coastline and that could make a difference.)

Florida is cheap it seems to me. However I don't think the cruising can compare with the Virgins or others nearby.
But realistically, why not a different place every year?

I would considering Puerto Rico for long term storage over the VIs. Cheaper and more accessible flights and easy to get over to the VIs. We'll likely leave a similar sized cat there when we head out. Fajardo has most of the good marinas on that end. Puerto del Rey marina is what we were looking at.

I agree... keep moving the boat forward. No reason to keep it in one place.

BTW - keeping the boat in the Bahamas is a GREAT and inexpensive option. We were getting yearly rates [just a few months ago] that were cheaper than in St. Augustine.
