Overwintering Afloat in Croatia - Recomendations ?
Howdy,
I'm looking for recommendations for wintering afloat in Croatia. (46' Catamaran, Full time live-aboard, Australia flagged boat and crew !).
With the Schengen visa games, we want to be out of the EU from late Oct till February. I'm aware it can be possible to get extensions in Italy etc, but that doesn't work for us. (We need/want to cruise IN Schengen from march/april/may plus other issues)
Anyone wintered afloat / lived aboard in Croatia and have recommendations as to Marina's, services etc ?
Ideally would like to be someplace there might be a few other people doing the same, but not mandatory.
Regards

We did not winter over there but with the issues in Turkey now - if we were to look at that area we would talk with the Marina in Dubrovnik - we stopped there for some repairs by the Jeanneau dealer - EuroMarine - and it was nice - expense? no idea - as for how cold? no idea - good place if they had facilities would be Sarande Albania but not sure they have facilities - if you want a contact there I have one.
good luck

Thanks, will contact them.
Not sure what 'issues' you are concerned with in Turkey btw. We are sitting here in Marmaris now, and coming back for winter is one of our options we are seriously considering, however there are complications with our pets (cats) for going back into the EU after.
I find the people here in turkey pleasant & professional and the country great to tour. We've drive from Istanbul down to Marmaris, to Izmir, Bodrum and around some of the countryside, and I have no safety concerns at all. (Beyond 'sensible tourist in foreign country ones !).
The quality of technical services here has also been excellent.
I personally think Turkey is getting an unfair rap in the media at present, especially the south.
Regards
Mark.

Don't mean to hijack the thread here but maybe you could answer a quick question please? We were thinking of Turkey as well but wondering about your pet concerns? We have a dog!

Why not Montenegro? Nice place, is outside UE and Schengen, not as expensive as Croatia, I plan to wintering there (dry).

ACI marinas, and particularly the one in Pula, Istria as they are conveniently located, totally protected, close to downtown and cheaper. Good restaurants, nice people and 2 hrs away from Venice by ferry. Slaven form N for service. Been there 2 years would go again.

Re: Overwintering Afloat in Croatia - Recomendations ?
Just be aware that it gets cold in Croatia in winter and the Bura can blow for a prolonged time and strongly so where ever you are you will want to ensure you are well sheltered from the NE.
Croatia also goes to sleep for the winter so many places will be totally dead. Even the bigger towns can be deserted with no where to eat out and very limited shopping.
There are some towns with a bit of life though, Rogoznica where I am based is one as there are a couple of restaurants open year round and some cafes but it is still very quiet. Marina Frapa may have spaces available for the winter.
If you are there and the weather is fine and the Bura isn't blowing hard then there is still some great sailing to be had.
However, keep your ears tuned to news on Croatia joining Schengen as this is a part of their accession treaty with the EU after joining. When it might happen is still anyone's guess but could happen anytime.

That is an option. Recommend any particular place ?
In the EU but out of Schengen has some appeal to our winter projects (read here, Amazon deliveres for the Admiral but others are fine.
Our additional complication, I need either an EU, or Rabies Free or Rabies controlled country. (Turkey is none of the above).

Thanks for the tips. Will check out Marina's at Rogoznica Quiet is ok with us.
Cold is fine. (its not that cold really !).
Agree on keeping an eye on Croatia's joining Schengen. Also keep an eye on the proposal for 1 Year Schengen tourist visa's, which is (SLOWLY) winding its way through the EU parliament system.

Turkey itself is great for pets. The problems start when you want to get it back into the EU. Turkey is a 'High Rabies' country as far as the EU is concerned,. Rabies Countries - Pet Travel so the procedure for getting pet back into Greece looks next to impossible for a cruiser with the timeframes (Unless I'm missing something !). See bold bit below.
Greece Pet Passport - Current Dog and Cat Import Requirements
"Rabies Titer Test - Blood Titer Test
If your pet is entering Greece from a high-rabies country (click here), your pet must be microchipped, then vaccinated for rabies (in that order). After waiting 30 days, a rabies titer test (FAVN) must be administered. (Have your veterinarian scan your pet's microchip prior to the titer test.)
Samples must be processed at approved laboratories. Assuming test results are within acceptable limits, your pet can enter Greece no sooner than 3 calendar months after the date the blood was drawn and avoid quarantine. This step is not required unless entering Greece from a high-rabies country (click here)."
And it looks like Montenegro and Albania are on that list, so same problem.
Regards
mark.

ACI Pula is not totally protected from the Bura as we found out when we were there. Just be aware that one side (closest to the Amphitheatre) is exposed to the NE wind although you don't get the chop it can, and does, blow you onto the boats already in the marina.

As for rabies concerned, Croatia is high on the list.
Non-Schengen Europe with no rabies risk in the Med are Gibraltar (non-EU) and Cpyrus (EU).
