Re: Olive Oil For Hurricane Lamps
NOW we find this out?! Now that we have all switched over to LEDs? Well I STILL have a couple of lamps so I am going to give it a try! Let's see, camera ready... Wesson, Canola, olive oil, grape seed... It will be a thread to rival Noelex and Panope!

Since you will be trying different oils, how about adding coconut oil to the list?
It will evoke a more tropical atmosphere to the cabin.

Add a little vanilla or maybe some peppermint oil... ok, maybe getting a little carried away here.

Don't forget to add some Tea Tree Oil to your list.
Not carried away for California, the capital of aroma therapy.

I've never burnt whale oil in a lamp but I do know ( from first hand experience .... best I add that bit before i get sent to the naughty hearsay corner ) that the smell of bulk whale oil in a confined space will turn the strongest stomach......

Re: Olive Oil For Hurricane Lamps
not really - I'm already planning a couple of drops of sesame oil for the fragrance - why not?
as for industrial olive oil - thats new to me, I recall the Italian immigrants who came to oz in the previous generation having to buy olive oil from the chemist shop because it wasnt used as a food product. As i already keep cheap canola oil for deep frying i think i'll give that a go in the lamps first. Because I have a couple of bottles of lamp oil aboard already i think ill kick off with a blend so i can use that up.

I got sick just watching that scene in "Heart of the Sea" where the kid had to go into the whale's head! I'll take your word for it. No whale oil for me.

Re: Olive Oil For Hurricane Lamps
Kama sutra oil? Standard on every California boat!
There is something called Hemp Oil. Does it smell like a burning weed?
If so, imagine a Guard Guard inspection of a boat, with the inspecting Guardsman asking about the familiar scent on the boat, to which the owner replies: "Sir, that is my oil lamp burning, nothing more."

I've never burnt whale oil either.
But I recall reading long ago that it burns with a "fishy" smell.
With all the odors on a boat, I can imagine (yes, speculate) even the sailor would smell fishy to those on land.

Re: Olive Oil For Hurricane Lamps
I had a nice "Son of a gun!" moment myself yesterday. Probably a lot of you know this/have done this, but it was new to me. My inflatable dinghy would not hold air for more than 2 hours. I did the soapy water, found two holes and patched them. Dinghy still would not stay inflated. So I sent away for a miracle, special dinghy sealant from a reputable dinghy dealer. With shipping it cost $60.00 a quart. Followed the directions, put it in, rolled, flipped and shook it every 1/2 hour for 4 hours as specified. Didn't do anything for my dinghy, still would not hold air. A couple weeks later my neighbor recommends "Slime", the green stuff you put in flat tires. A gallon costs $25.00 at the local auto parts store. I thought what can I lose. I pumped about 2/3 gallon in the bigger chamber with the biggest leak and not quite 1/3 in the smaller chamber. Did the same roll, flip, and shake routine for a 1/2 hour. It is now 30 hours later and the dinghy is still tight as a drum!!

Re: Olive Oil For Hurricane Lamps
So can anyone recommend a modern quality oil lamp for backup in the event all of your power was compromised?
The problem with candles in a hot tropical environment is they tend to transform into something unrecognizable...
Just sayin'
