OK, Lets hear how terrible Jenneaus are.
Yep that would do it for me I think you said in an earlier thread you wanted to live on board, so decent sized rear cabin looks good. Some coffin like quarter berth doesn't do it for me. The main cabin, smart and suitable for entertaining and living on board, afterall this is going to be your home.

As for Jeanneaus, they have made thousands of this sized yacht over the years, many being favourite charter boats for the European market. The charter companies won't have something that falls to bits after a couple of years.

Yours looks like the Sun Oddyssey, we seriously considered an older Sunrise 34, but a total lack of paperwork meant a possible very expensive VAT bill, but she had been from UK to Antigua, twice, the clue was the extra fans down below.

She should be fast, fun and easy to sail.
The French do make good yachts.

Yup. Jeanneaus and Beneteau really really suck as boats....and i want one.

Bennie First 1980-1990 I understand are good boats.
Jeanneaus - I've never seen any advice on which models and years are good, so if you have opinions please post for my education thanks!

Not been on a First, but believe them to be performance orientated, whilst the Oceanis range is aimed at us mortals.

Friends have a Ben 36 centre cockpit which doubles as a liveaboard whilst they are in this country. Has a hardtop which provides great protection for the cockpit but does make parking interesting when the wind catches it. However like the Jeanneaus, it is very nice down below and you would be happy to have guests on board for entertaining, it is afterall a home.

Older firsts were cruisers by todays standards. Newer firsts are racey, but i like their interiors better than the oceanis/bennie series

If boat is lees than about 36' tiller or wheel is fine. Above 36', wheel is probably best

Radar depends on where you will be sailing. Without knowing, can't comment.

Swim platform - meh... irrelevant. It is good to be able to get into the boat from the water, but you can buy ladders that mount along the side and are removable, for when you are at anchor, and if you accidentally fall over the side under way, you are probably not gonna keepup with the boat anyway

Sail material - depends on your budget. Dacron is best value for money and longest life, so is the choice for most cruisers. more exotic materials are more expensive and don't generally last as long. If you have plenty of money, consider a cruising laminate or kevlar

Backstay - will be determined by your rig. swept back spreaders = single backstay, cutter rig also

Roller furler headsail - yes

Roller furler main - No. Lazy jacks, with fully battened slab-reefing main (prferably on batt-cars) preferable

I's suggest wait and see what comes up when you're in a position to make an offer. Then the right boat will simply show up. I have never been one for searching out the right fit - I believe the right fit will simply leap out and hit us in the face when it is ready! My husband loves shopping with me! (Well, he hates shopping, but if he's GOT to shop, it's easiest with me!!)

Most of the choices have to do with how old you are -and/or - how physical you are. Most of the stuff is energy saving like the roller furling jib and mainsail. Same with centerboard/fixed - centerboards have to be dived and cleaned regularly.
- The rest is also convenience of navigation, safety and the reduction of workload so you can have time to enjoy the life. Center cockpit gives you an aft cabin of decent size and separates you from the guests up front.
- - Decide what you want to do with the boat. Where you want to take it. And how much work you want to do enroute and upon arrival. That will answer each question.
