New to Florida..need advice on marina's

Hello,

We are getting close to retirement and are having our boat brought over from California to Fort Lauderdale Florida by one of the yacht transport companies. We plan on living on the boat exploring Florida and the Bahamas. I am researching marina's to liveaboard and would like any recommendations. We are looking for a marina that has a pool, jacuzzi, fitness center and not far to the ocean.

Thank you!

First, welcome aboard CF.

Second, you must realize how broad your question is, and how little we know. Some suggestions to make responses more likely and meaningful: What's your boat, Power or Sail? Draft and air draft if sailing? Expected budget? Staying in S. Florida, or is mid-, west-, or northern-Florida an option?

Hi John...thank you for the response...Understood...sorry for not providing more info. We want to eventually buy a condo in a marina on either coast from Tampa south. For the next 3 years or so we thought it best to cruise around visiting as many areas and marinas as possible to see where we would like to finally reside. Not being very familiar with Florida other than a few trips to Key West we just looking for opinions and experiences of others. We have a 50 foot cockpit motoryacht and spend a lot of time scuba diving and cruising here off the California coast and are looking for warmer water . Our budget is about $100k per year to include all cruising activities and personal healthcare management etc...

I could probably manage to pay for a marina slip in Ft Lauderdale that has a pool, jacuzzi, and health club, close to an ocean inlet, .................... for a couple of months.

Sounds good ...that is what we are looking for...any suggestions on a marina in the Fort Lauderdale area? The company that is transporting our boat arrives in Fort Lauderdale so it would be great to have something lined up upon arrival...thanks!

With a six figure yearly budget, they can likely pull it off, wild card health management.
Possibly if you could break it down to X amount to spend on marina rent that would help.
Easy coast of South Fl during “season” can be very expensive. However the best and cheapest Marina I have ever stayed at was the Ft Lauderdale Marina, off season, it was like $1 a Ft per day including power, or some similar very cheap price.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Brent.

The Bahia Mar Resort and Yachting Center (Ft Lauderdale) might suit

Re: New to Florida..need advice on marina's

Just for an example, last winter I looked at a marina on the Manatee River, near Bradenton Florida, which is on the south edge of Tampa Bay. Nice marina, gym, pool, eateries, etc, $900/month for a 42 ft boat, plus electric. probably three miles and you are in the Gulf of Mexico. Looked secure for storms, far enough up the river. No bridges.

ActiveCaptain has decent info on marinas, although it's not easily query-able by specific criteria.

You can query the MarinaLife database using your criteria... then you can check AC for more/other details and reviews...

Can't remember whether jacuzzi and/or fitness centers were available ML query fields...

Re: New to Florida..need advice on marina's

If you like diving there's not much on the west coast until you get down to the keys. Most places it's shallow until you get far off the coast and then there are no reefs and not much terrain to dive on. Example, Tampa area I go 20-30 miles offshore to dive wrecks sunk for artificial reefs and it's only 80-90' deep.

SE coast is your best bet for that but then the cruising is a bit limited. Basically you go north or south up the coast between inlets or up and down the ICW waiting for bridges to open. Both are actually fun for the first few trips but get rather dull after a while. That leaves the Bahamas which is close (46 miles from Government Cut in Miami to Bimini) which are one of the best cruising grounds in the world.

SE Florida is by far the most expensive area of the state but should be doable with your budget. However if you want to save a few bucks for more cruising luxuries move just a little farther north and prices start dropping a lot. With your boat it would only add a day at most to the trip going south before crossing to the Bahamas.
