Re: Need a New Name !

In Greek nomad is nomada (using our alphabet). Nomada has a nice ring to.

Re: Need a New Name !

Every owner of my boat has named it differently firt "Roll N' Go" then "Dulcinea" and finally "Rover", the first time I got on the radio and said "This is Rover, over".....I realized it had to go. In looking for a new name I was told "It will come to you" or "let the boat decide" (as well as ask the boat permission). At first I found a really kewl Russian/Inuit word that meant "open water in pack ice" (the idea being it was my little patch of open water in the pack ice of life....but something just didn't feel right. Then while listening to the "Irish Rovers" performance of the song "Waltzing Matilda" it was explained what that meant...it just felt good. Problem is my boat has a reputation in this down so I will have to wait on that.
I must add one thing, be careful to follow the proper name change procedures, 1: remove all evidence of the name from the boat 2: right the old name on a piece of paper, 3: place it in a box 4: burn it and scatter the ashes on the out going tide (that is the simple version)

Eeehh, Good, but not a hit.
I'm also thinking of Vulcan, the Roman god of Rubber. (I know, God of the Forge, husband to Venus)

Re: Need a New Name !

OK so have everything ready for the renaming ceremony but question...everything says to do the ceremony before the "maiden voyage"...so does that count from the boat ramp to the dock? (abut 200 yards) or can we do the ceremony Tuesday pm after she is safely docked? Or do I need to do it prior to her actually getting back into the water? She is on a trailer in the driveway right now almost all work is done and she is being put into the water Tuesday

Unless you'e the type to blame the vageries of life on mystical unknown forces I'd suggest doing it when it is meaningful for you. Of course that is just my opinion and not based on paranormal fact.

You could also look at it as before the first voyage after you named the boat and/or the first voyage after you found out the need for a ceremony. Of course if you have gone on your first voyage with the new name and want to cover yourself, there are all sorts of nautical ceremonies to counteract events that may cause bad luck.

I think it's no coincidence that most involve drinking rum! No reason to limit yourself to just one

Ship launchings in the Ottoman Empire were accompanied by prayers to Allah, the sacrifice of sheep, and appropriate feasting.
The Vikings are said to have offered human sacrifice to appease the angry gods of the northern seas.
Chaplain Henry Teonge of Britain's Royal Navy left an interesting account of a warship launch, a "briganteen of 23 oars," by the Knights of Malta in 1675: "Two fryers and an attendant went into the vessel, and kneeling down prayed halfe an houre, and layd their hands on every mast, and other places of the vessel, and sprinkled her all over with holy water. Then they came out and hoysted a pendent to signify she was a man of war; then at once thrust her into the water."

In India, ships have historically been launched with a puja ceremony that dedicates the ship to a god, and seeks blessings for her and her sailors. Historically, Hindu priests would perform the puja ceremony at launch. In the 20th century, ship are launched with a lady breaking a coconut on the bow of the vessel, which is sometimes followed by a small puja..

I favour the last one... goes well with Rum...
and Coconut....

Wet her top before you wet her bottom...

Re: Need a New Name !

I know that when you launch a pleasure craft some "pleasuring" must be going on.

Sooo she is supposed to hit the water Tuesday or Wednesday depends on when hitch for truck is finished...bottom painted, teak refinished, fiberglass touched up and polished, new registration numbers being applied tomorrow but we don't have the decals for the new name yet so may have to wait til she is in the water
Interior also updated with new fridge that will run on battery or shore power, teeny microwave and a double cooking burner and portable AC in case it is needed
