I use candles. What wrong with them? Why would they be ill advised? they have been on ships since before ships were invented.

I don't see why having 2 dogs and a cat makes a difference. After they burn their noses a few times they will learn what children learn: Flame = Hot


Now, getting one to stay alight in the cockpit at night without a glass is a real trick!

We use a trawler lamp also, but if you must have candles.... My experience has been, if you can place them in a holder that cannot be over turned and you replace them when they are about 60-70% gone you will be ok. The danger other than falling over is when they burn low enough that the puddle can get hot enough to self ignite and burn without the wick. This happened in my home once when my candle loveing wife failed to fully extinguish one. It came back to life after we retired and burned low enough to flame on. Gotta love smoke detectors, saved my house.

Do not understand the candle fetish especially when we regularly see residences burned down because of leaving them unattended. Apparently a lot of offshore produced candles have lead in the wick and maybe noxious chemicals in the wax. Why subject yourself to unnecessary pollutants??

I happen to like several of those "unnecessary pollutants"

and really I hardly think the Co2 emmisions froma few candles are the issue here.

Nor I think does anyone advocate "unattended" operation.

Don't be so sure she won't like the LED candles. We went through the same 'dynamic tensions'...and now both enjoy the LED's. Not only are they safe and smoke-free (including no residue on the ceilings etc) but they are also...

1. less expensive because of their very long life
2. very convenient with multi-phase timers that turn 'on' and 'off' automatically if and when you want
3. incredibly realistic...we have even had people go to blow them out on the dinner table after a meal
4. and fun too for outside use...we decorate the outside with tealights at Christmas time, with other boats wondering how we manage to keep our candles burning!

those unnecessary pollutants are able to keep you warm on a cold nite--lol and have ambiance--if you dont love your spouse, go without ambiance...rodlmao---



and an oil lamp on board is a good thing---what do you think they used to do on board--walk in darkness and coldness????

i found some gorgeous oil lamps for boats--harnish makes some and weems and plath makes some, among other manufacturers.... weems and plath look more like candles than the others.

Propane leak? The smell of propane, once it has reached a concentration that will combust, is so ridiculously overpowering and noxious you cannot stay in the room with it = no worries.

You forgot gasoline fumes in the bilge leaking in from the can stored in the ventilated locker that has a unnoticed crack in it.

That means NO CANDLES for her.

The Admiral feels that you can't have too many cushions...and yes, they do have to be moved often. It's all about looks...or so it seems to the Captain...but if it makes the Admiral happy, so be it. Experience suggests there'd be many, many others in the same 'boat', but perhaps not you Badsanta?

Back to the thread, there is no doubt the LED candles do indeed provide ambience...

The images don't really do them justice because they lack the 'flicker', but we are yet to find someone who doesn't say they are beautiful and incredibly realistic, made with paraffin wax, scented or unscented...and safe, of course.

We use candles all the time- in port and at anchor, down below and in the cockpit. Oddly enough the five year old knows not to mess with them. The only "candle issues" we have are keeping the citronella's burning to keep the bugs away in the summer. If you can't keep an eye on a candle in a space the size of a cockpit or saloon, where can you??
