Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Before I post the expenses, I put a poll on this one and there is only 1 answer on it so it’s simple. If you what these monthly threads to continue you need to vote on the poll. Lurkers, if you are not a member join and vote, if a member and not logged in, log in and vote. If there isn’t an answer on the poll that fits for you post it in the thread (but if you do it really shows a “yes” vote )

Still in a slip in Gulfport, MS till end of month then heading to Marathon. Wife fell off dock and got hurt (broken shoulder) so there is delay while crew schedule allows them to join me somewhere on the way as my wife wasn't hip on me doing it all alone.

Did grocery, beer and supply runs as normal, but it seemed to cost less this month to be made up on restock next month.

Boat costs were high. Ordered a new mainsail, which is more than a month budget by itself, but have only paid Ĺ of it as deposit. Got a $76 brand new sewing machine and have been making curtains, window covers, and dinghy chaps. I never had used a sewing machine before, but it’s not very hard to sew ugly type stuff like those. Made a new shelf in the salon, replaced a bunch of interior lights with LEDs. Had an AC seawater line clog up and that ended up a fair expense in acid, hoses, and fittings to clear up. Did a bunch of other small things that I can't remember off top of head, but can see added up to real money in little small bites.

Only fuel this month was a propane tank refill.

Entertainment includes some going to the movies, some books, Redbox rentals etc.

When My wife fell into the water her cell phone was in her pocket, so that was the end of it. At same time my old Apple 5C was kind of past it’s use by date even though it was still working. So, we both got budget new Samsung phones, but they were still $200 each.

Marina costs were a month’s slip with power and liveaboard fee.

Medical of course are doctor visits and copays for wife’s accident.

Transportation and travel costs were a rental car/gas to go to our daughter’s and the local bus in Gulfport. Rental car really could be called medical as it was to take my wife to Jacksonville, so our insurance covered the various doctors etc. visits.

The total expenses were $6,529.58. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers:

Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries - $ 682.24
Boat upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 3729.67
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 4.76
Dining and drinking out - $ 469.14
Entertainment - $ 70.88
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 511.83
Fees – $ -30.96
Marina - $ 492.50
Electric - $ 0
Medical - $ 330
Transportation and travel - $ 269.58
Gifts - $ 0
Water - $ 0
Registration - $ 0
Insurance - $ 0

Re: Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

I Vote yes, if i need to ill make up 10 more accounts and vote yes on all of them. I'm deep in the planning stages, and have already picked up my boat for the next 5 years.

for some reason nobody wants to share what it cost them. Some people will, but only over a PM, so if i'm looking at a thread from 2 years ago I'm out of luck.

your reports help a lot of people understand some of the cost of their dreams, some people may save more some people might cast off earlier, I would say that having real costs is a gold mine for people to look through.

I'm going to start posting up a monthly report about the cost of fixing up a boat, the more information out there the better. I bet 1000s of dreamers have come across your posts and its at least given them a base. Keep up the good work

Or, the majority of the readers are on the app. It just so happened that I was on the computer instead of my phone, so was actually able to vote.

hard to believe sometimes that so many older traditional types of people who would be cruisers even know how to use an app

I voted yes because it’s fun watching others tell you you’re doing it wrong.

Iím almost 100% on the IPad, it just fits in the boat easier, no boot time etc.
App of course is different though, one thing is canít vote on polls.
But dragging the computer out, dropping the table to put it on etc just isnít worth it to me.

On the iPad or smart phone app you can still vote in polls. In the upper right there are three dots in a line. Tap on those and you get a menu which allows you to select Web View. Once you select Web View you will see the forum exactly as you do on your computer. Then you can vote. I just did it a few minutes ago on this poll.

I voted yes because I find it entertaining. I spend what I spend and you spend what you spend. Life is good.
