When you get some pension info from an old employer and find out that what you were thinking was a $500/yr pension is really $478/mo

Re: Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

I voted yes because I need to know how wrong you are by spending all this money and that I can do it for half and even less if I sailed to Greece.

But I digress, keep the numbers coming for a reality check.

I’m thinking a new line item:

Dancing Girls - $478

I suggest you consult with Mrs Sailorboy1 before you pursue this line of entertainment. If she is still down from the broken shoulder perhaps dancing boys would cheer her up?

Still in a slip in Gulfport, MS till end of month then heading to Marathon. Wife fell off dock and got hurt (broken shoulder) so there is delay while crew schedule allows them to join me somewhere on the way as my wife wasn't hip on me doing it all alone.

Did grocery, beer and supply runs as normal, but it seemed to cost less this month to be made up on restock next month.

Boat costs were high. Ordered a new mainsail, which is more than a month budget by itself, but have only paid ½ of it as deposit. Got a $76 brand new sewing machine and have been making curtains, window covers, and dinghy chaps. I never had used a sewing machine before, but it’s not very hard to sew ugly type stuff like those. Made a new shelf in the salon, replaced a bunch of interior lights with LEDs. Had an AC seawater line clog up and that ended up a fair expense in acid, hoses, and fittings to clear up. Did a bunch of other small things that I can't remember off top of head, but can see added up to real money in little small bites.

Only fuel this month was a propane tank refill.

Entertainment includes some going to the movies, some books, Redbox rentals etc.

When My wife fell into the water her cell phone was in her pocket, so that was the end of it. At same time my old Apple 5C was kind of past it’s use by date even though it was still working. So, we both got budget new Samsung phones, but they were still $200 each.

Marina costs were a month’s slip with power and liveaboard fee.

Medical of course are doctor visits and copays for wife’s accident.

Transportation and travel costs were a rental car/gas to go to our daughter’s and the local bus in Gulfport. Rental car really could be called medical as it was to take my wife to Jacksonville, so our insurance covered the various doctors etc. visits.

The total expenses were $6,529.58. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers:

Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries - $ 682.24
Boat upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 3729.67
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 4.76
Dining and drinking out - $ 469.14
Entertainment - $ 70.88
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 511.83
Fees – $ -30.96
Marina - $ 492.50
Electric - $ 0
Medical - $ 330
Transportation and travel - $ 269.58
Gifts - $ 0
Water - $ 0
Registration - $ 0
Insurance - $ 0
Call me dumb due to the fact on my LG phone using the Cruisers app even after opening the web view I cant see a way to vote.
So I'll just let you know here that I really enjoy and learn from your monthly cost profile.
I vote yes the only way I can, through this note.
Thanks.

Re: Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

A big yes.

I appreciate the effort put into this and it helps validate my own projections and past experiences. Still fitting out and recently retired but soon to take off and go back out cruising full time. Nice to know what realistic and a similar cruising life style to mine might cost.

Thanks for your thread.

I think poll results are missleading. Many are interested but don't bother with voting (like most not voting in political elections) or maybe not logged on so can't vote.

Re: Month 37 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Votes yes. Thanks for sharing. Insight into the costs, even monthly based, is very informative for me as I look deeper into the liveaboard lifestyle.

Question - do costs include personal life and health insurance expenses?
