This post and thread made me remember a story about the cost of leaving it all behind and following the cruising life. Back in the early 1990s a friend of mine at our club decided he had had enough and walked away from his
work life. He was maybe 40 and owned a nice double ender about 42 feet in SE
New England. He had a high paying high stress job up in Hartford Ct and was always talking about the stress of the job and feeling chest pains, numb arms etc.
One day I see him and he tells me he quit his job,
sold all his possessions and put the proceeds into a mutual fund of some sort. He says so long and heads for the
South America.
Several years go by and he is back on the club visiting friends. He is now in mid to late forties and tells me he was gone and lived aboard while he cruised the
Caribbean. I asked him what a trip like that cost. Back then he said he was spending about 12K a year. He said it was cheaper than you would think.
Punch line is that while he was doing this his investment had a nice run and he became a millionaire.
Talk about sticking it to the man.
