Re: Month 25 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Numbers scare me. Bookkeeping makes me sick. So I could KISS people like you who take time to share info like this. Thank you.

Re: Month 25 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

This post and thread made me remember a story about the cost of leaving it all behind and following the cruising life. Back in the early 1990s a friend of mine at our club decided he had had enough and walked away from his work life. He was maybe 40 and owned a nice double ender about 42 feet in SE New England. He had a high paying high stress job up in Hartford Ct and was always talking about the stress of the job and feeling chest pains, numb arms etc.

One day I see him and he tells me he quit his job, sold all his possessions and put the proceeds into a mutual fund of some sort. He says so long and heads for the South America.

Several years go by and he is back on the club visiting friends. He is now in mid to late forties and tells me he was gone and lived aboard while he cruised the Caribbean. I asked him what a trip like that cost. Back then he said he was spending about 12K a year. He said it was cheaper than you would think.

Punch line is that while he was doing this his investment had a nice run and he became a millionaire.

Talk about sticking it to the man.

I'm not becoming a millionaire. But my first year we spent around $46k and only were down about $3k in assets at the end of the year. But, this year ..................

Re: Month 25 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Dear Sailorboy1,

Glad to hear your lifestyle has not caused any serious financial hardships. Sound like things are going fine

I have one more year of college payments for the youngest daughter and that will be behind us. She already has a good job lined up for next year

We own an old tank of a cruiser called an Acapulco 40. We need to modernize a bit by adding a steering system to ditch the six foot tiller and add a furling unit to the head stay to make sailing from the cockpit easier. Lastly, I need a powerful windlass to replace the old mechanical sea-tiger. Would rather push a button with a beverage in my hand than work a lever back and forth to haul the anchor tackle off the bottom. Should be able to do all that for what we were putting out for a single semester.

Your medical expense seems to not include a monthly medical insurance payment. As I am still 3 yrs from 65 and medicare, I will have to budget a big chunk for that every month.
- Are you on medicare?
- Any thoughts about additional insurance?
- If you cruise outside the US, what do you do for medical then?

I report every cent of money I spend on these threads and have explained the medical on at least 1/4 of them.

The $20.19 medical I reported this month was the cost to me of the Silver ACA plan I have.

Insurance outside this is a topic for another thread and your should search for and read them (I have)

Your numbers are very close to ours, for a year of cruising the East Coast on a 45’ Shearwater Schooner.
Thanks for posting.

Plan ahead, do ahead, so you can stay ahead!
