Re: Month 2 Expenses & Costs of Cruising

We just did a summary on ours for the last 7 years -- our low was $2,300 in the western Caribbean and high was $3,500 in the Med - but remember this is USD so the exchange rate was 1.3 to 1 - ouch - our average is $3,100 of which 25% goes to the boat -
it will all average out in the end -

as for someone who said don't worry just spend and then get a job if you run out - not really an option in a foreign country -

Re: Month 2 Expenses & Costs of Cruising

Thanks so much for this-really useful info. I'm sure it will average out over time, although I think like you, we'd be very tempted to eat, drink and go out when in marinas! Hope you're enjoying your time 😀⛵️

Wow, close to $300 a week for dinning. Must have dined out very often or ate at high-end restaurants . Good for you !

Thanks for the info. Good to hear a little reality, even if it's your own, it helps balance the rest of us. It'll be even better to hear regular updates.

As to the fishing rod comment, would like to hear how that goes and what you can catch and eat.

Don't you hate it when you buy something, and someone else tells you, " Oh I could've gotten that for you much cheaper".

$7k per month sounds about right, realistically speaking.

Yellowfin tuna. We're adding two more trolling rods and Penn 80 series reels for 2017, making a total of three.

We sail along at 5-7 knots, which is the perfect trolling speed. Why not troll for supper?

What's the cost of those?

Re: Month 2 Expenses & Costs of Cruising

We spend some additional money on other things, but our monthly cost of cruising usually stays between 2K and 3K. This remains true, as an average, whether we are remaining at marinas or cruising over a longer distance.

Re: Month 2 Expenses & Costs of Cruising

When you guys are saying 2K to 3K per month or 7K per month... what exactly does that include? Does that include insurance on your boat, maintenace, and taxes on your income?

Good ask! Some of those numbers seem really high ( but what do I know, I'm not out cruising right now!!). What are you spending $7k a month for? Lin and Larry did a survey a few years ago and came out with an average cost of $1500 a month, but did notice that American cruisers tended to spend more than average ( not sure why)

We use a couple of hand lines with bungee cords - we lose a lot less fish but the thrill of the fight is lost but when you are fishing to eat hand lines work better

over the past 7 years we have averaged $3,100 a month -- and that is all inclusive and we sail about 2,500 to 3,500 miles a year -- if you go to dollars and cents area of this forum and look for 7 years of cost data you will find everything we spend and what we spend it on --
