Missing My V-berth
Is it just me? I have been trying to adjust to sleeping in an aft cabin (3+ weeks now) and the constant slapping of water on the hull is making me nuts and exhausted. I can't hear anything the boat is doing other than slap, slap, slap, growl . . . and I can't sleep for it. It slaps even in very calm water.
Help! any and all advice desired.

Re: Missing my V-berth
To me the V is the primo berth. Others disagree. I like to hear the anchor rig, open a hatch directly overhead for a wonderful night breeze, stick my head out if the wind changes in the middle of the night etc.. yeah... it's harder to get into compared with a walk-around aft berth....

Re: Missing my V-berth
Slept in the saloon rather than the master cabin at the bow because of the hull-slapping forward.

Love the bow. Air down the hatch, prairie-dog abilities, but maybe you had other compelling issues: why did you switch?

Re: Missing my V-berth
The bow will slap a little when the wind is adverse to the tidal current. Aft, the wavelets seem to slap up under the flat hull sections. It can be annoying at times, but I would guess you'll learn to tune it out....

Glad to hear from you Boatman. I am on a Beneteau First 41s5 - probably should have mentioned that - oops.

If it is not too nosey to ask, what make/model was the boat?

Re: Missing my V-berth
Try earplugs. I find they work great. We also arranged swim noodles at the stern/water interface and they cut down on the noise of the hull slap.

Re: Missing my V-berth
I love my aft cabin, affectionately known as the "afterbirth",but it is very noisy if I am docked stern to the wind. The builder extended the transom by three feet, bringing it up out of the water, and creating wonderful large flat surfaces under the stern for the small waves to pound on. On a steel hull, you have to hear it to believe it!
Solutions?
1. sleep up for'd on the pilot berth
2. anchor out, in which case I am always bow into wind and waves
3. run a line through one or two of those nerf tube swimming aids you see kids playing with at the pool or beach. Tie one end to the stern port cleat, throw it over the stern, snug the cushioned line up against the transom at the water line, and tie the other end to the starb'd cleat.
