Mattress suggestions?

I'm going to be replacing my boat's two queen-size mattresses (it's a multihull, so we can get away with it) and I'm going to have them custom made. I'm particularly interested in hearing from folks who have actually had this done. The issue is that I'd like to keep the overall thickness down to 3 inches, uncompressed. My current ones are 5" and cause my head to scuff the headliner when sitting up reading at night. I'm considering using two separate density foams to achieve a comfy base and avoid "bottoming out". I've tried memory foam covers, and while nice, I found them to be too form fitting to allow easy tossing and turning in bed. I could add an inch of memory foam, if it were encapsulated within the mattress itself, because it collapses pretty completely.

Does anyone have experience building a mattress from scratch? I have had several mattresses over the years and still haven't found the right combination.

Re: Mattress suggestions?

We have used the lux high quality from the wholesale side of the foam factory...

Polyurethane Foam Sheets | Packaging | Comfort Foam | Soft Cushion

... and really like it. We also used the 3 inches for more headroom and don't bottom out on it. We have it in both boats and even sleep on it at home. The price is right, fee shipping and it has held up well.

It is a high density very firm foam but we sleep on it well. Saying that everyone has a firmness that they like so we might love it and you might hate it. They do have a number of densities to choose from though.

There is more info on our site here...

.... and how we covered it and made fitted sheets for the v-berth (not a concern for you),

Re: Mattress suggestions?

We have a custom latex HMC mattress made in So. Cal. They make a great mattress. Nice thing about latex is it won't mildew and it's not flammable.
