Is your boat an icebreaker?

Re: Maine Winter

I have a mooring in a harbor that for the most part doesn't freeze (skim ice once and awhile overnight but goes with the tide). And I used to run my shrimp dragger out of there winters so I'm used to the skiff issues. I was mostly wondering what you did for heat. Diesel, propane, solid fuel, or other, and what experiences you may have had, and opinions which worked best for them.

not sure what harbor you're in but we had a ton of ice here in portland last winter, fortunately I wasn't living aboard last winter. the winter I lived aboard my pearson 30 i was at a dock so I had shore power, I had a large electric oil filled fin heater with a thermostat which kept the boat at a fairly steady 60ish, I had another smaller space heater which I would use from time to time when it was really cold. I'll be honest, a 30ft boat was awfully small to live on through the maine winter but I managed alright. the marina had laundry and hot showers which was nice.

Re: Maine Winter

Portland tends to freeze quite a bit more than where I am (Port Clyde). We're more open so the ice breaks up and leaves most of the time. I remember the fish exchange getting plugged pretty bad. I have a wood/coal stove, a diesel heater and a propane heater. I don't really want the propane onboard. I know the wood/coal stove works quite well as I used to have it on my fishing boat. The diesel stove I've never used.
