Mail Call! How do you get it?

Ok so I am starting to convert my bills to electronic so I can have them setup to autopay. But how do you get the regular mail? I know for the RV people there is a "Good Sam" service which received your mail to their address, and forwards it on to your next "listed" destination.

How does it work for boaters?

Cruisers get mail the same way, through a mail forwarding service, although with electronic bill paying (isn't all snail mail bills?) and e-mail there's a lesser demand for the service.

Contact NATO (National Assoc. of Trailor Owners) in Sarasota 800-237-6286. They do a great job for us while cruising. They will hold your mail until you contact them with a forwarding address. The service is very reasonable$$$$$.

For mail forwarding talk to the folks at St. Brendans Isle. They are in Fl and are doing it for cruisers all over the world. If you want to keep your current state of residence then you might have to look at other options. We use someone else in MD for residence reasons otherwise would be down at St. Brendans.

I use Voyagers Mail Forwarding Service in Islamorada Fl. (Next to Key Largo). When I am in the Keys I can pick up my mail.

Doghouse-
Watch out for "autopay" features. I still want to view & confirm any charge before I let the money go out to pay it. There are too many ways that someone can electronically add something to your bill, and with autopay, you'll find you've PAID it and have to fight to get it back, as opposed to refuting it and not having to fight.
If you won't be around to see the next bill coming into your email, you can still usually estimate what it will be and pre-authorize payment to be made at that date, in that amount.

Hellosailor,

Autopay (at the bank I use) works that I set a certian amount to be sent to x company every month. If the amount they bill changes, I can see it and send a second payment any time I want.

NOT ALL banks work this way, so check with your bank!! Good Warning!

Thanks for the options, please keep them comming.

We just set up a box with traveling mail box. Travelingmailbox.com
They forward your mail and act as a permanent address for taxes etc. Like St. Brendans they email scans of your envelooes so you can decide to forward, open and scan contents or shred.
They have many locations so you can choose where you want your address to be.

We second SBI mail service 12 years now and they have been great! They scan each envelope and we can go online and see what is in the mailbox

Re: Mail Call! How do you get it?

How complicated are your financial issues? There are a number of simple mail forwarding services that work very well. But I also have a client that often needs more than they can provide, so I hold a power of attorney that allows me to do pretty much anything in her name. From signing contracts, paying bills, everything except for writing a new will. It's back stopped by protections that limit my ability to steal from her, but do not do much to limit my authority.

I would not recommend this if its just paying a few credit cards, but there are some transactions that require signed paperwork, and that can be tricky while cruising. As an example, in many states you actually have to have a physical signature to sell real estate.

Another vote for St. Brendan's Isle... Been in business for over 20 years.

They receive you mail, scan the envelope and put it on a severed for your review...

You can then have them scan the contents, mail it to you, hold it or shred it.

The are cheap and always helpful on the phone.

My favorite service from SBI is that they will automatically take care of renewing my boats documentation. Quite handy when you're on the move.

Re: Mail Call! How do you get it?

Does anyone know if we could use St Brendan's for a address to get Florida residency? We're currently in Louisiana and are wanting to get FL residency while we cruise.

My St. Brendans address has been my only address and identified residence for all my records since 2001. This is for my voter's registration, drivers license, IRS, ...... everything. Call St. Brendan's Isle for all the answers to your questions.
