liveaboard bay area

I'm considering buying a sailboat in the Bay area to live on. What are the best places that allow liveaboards or look the other way if your not a problem?

Hello and Welcome Aboard CF!

I see you are a new member.

The topic you raised has been discussed several times before and there are many good comments and tips in those previous discussions.

Here is a link to the threads mentioning "Liveaboard San Francisco." Reading through them will give you a broad view of places and suggestions:

Re: liveaboard bay area

I know people living aboard in both Alameda & Emeryville. Alameda is great, as it isn't far from ferries and BART.

I don't think there is any legal liveaboard in SF or there are waitlists many years long.

Re: liveaboard bay area

most the marina's in the SF Bay have some liveaboard slips. Maximum amount is 10% by state regulation of the bay area. There are in most cases a wait list for a liveaboard slip.

However one can take a transient slip for a month or three, sometimes longer. In many cases the daily transient slip fee is no more then the monthly and liveaboard fee. well pretty close anyway.

I agree that Alameda has the best weather and stores are near by. Probably years wait now a days.

Be advised that many marina's in the SF bay area now require a 35 foot boat length for liveaboard. Use to be 30 foot till a few years ago.

Slip and liveaboard fees will be in the $600+ month range. Liveaboard fees range from $200 to $350 depending on location. All will want the first month deposit and proof of liability insurance. They will inspect the boat too.

Generally You'll have to show up at the harbormasters office to see if they have a slip or if there is a waiting list. Calling for a liveaboard slip will not work.
