Live aboard wannabe near Laporte TX

Hello just fishing for info / help... I'll be in Laporte TX next month on business my company has a facility in the area and I wanted to look at possible live aboard areas and maybe visit a little. Also if there were any sailing opportunities I could be persuaded to stay over the weekend... possible plan is to relocate so I can live aboard.

Even a heads up on a cool place to have a beer would be appreciated.

Regards Steven

Steven, Check the area map for "Clear Lake" about 5 or 6 miles south of Laporte. This location has more than a dozen marinas and most of the sailboats in the area.

And if you just want to watch boats, go to outriggers bar under the kemah bridge on a weekend. Every boat going out/in for a daysail goes right past it.

Check out Seabrook Marina. They have room for liveaboards. You are just 5 minutes from La Porte. It is one of three marinas that are deep water,so to speak. You can actually get out of the marina at low tide with a north wind.

I am at Kemah Boardwalk Marina. It has deep water slips, all the action of the Boardwalk, and all the shops in walking distance. Nice marina.

And all headaches associated with the traffic getting in that marina. Anyone who is considering Kemah should be aware of horrendous traffic half the year.

Bayland Marina is just across the ship channel bridge at Baytown.

Re: Live aboard wannabe near Laporte TX

Just closing the loop... I had a great time in Houston and La Porte. Chartered from a very friendly bunch (boats a bit on the old side but stayed afloat) on the first day sailed with a friend, second was my first solo charter. The marinas I visited wanted a minimum of 38' to live aboard which was more than I really wanted, but could make it work. Looking forward to going again, may try and get transferred there if I can.

Many marinas in the area do not have that 38' rule.Keep looking.Glad you had a nice time in Texas.Come on back.

Re: Live aboard wannabe near Laporte TX + purchase

Sooo... i have stumbled across a boat i like near Kemah TX and if the boat is as advertised and the price is right, I may just purchase ahead of schedule which was to be early next year (2018). The yearly marina dues where it is currently parked/docked/moored are less than my last one week charter in Carribean. plus the flights from Minneapolis to Houston are currently 87usd (i know this could change any time). so from the collective wisdom: -
what other yearly expenses could i expect... bottom cleaning, taxes...?
what is the best strategy for hurricane season?
is this a good idea?

the other good thing for us is it would be a good winter 'bug out' spot because we are all 'equator babies' currently living in Minnesota.

Best Regards Steven
