Live aboard marinas in Baltimore, Md

Hello out there!
I am looking at a couple of houseboats at Gangplank, but would love to be closer to friends and work. Does anyone know of or could recommend live aboard communities here in B-more? Thanks!

The Gangplank in DC?

Anyway, I can't speak directly to liveaboard venues in Bal'mer, but in the meantime you might check area marina reviews in ActiveCaptain... get a feel for what's there and where exactly "there" is if you're not familiar with marinas the harbor area.

Is ActiveCaptain a separate site?

You might like Baltimore Marine Center at Lighthouse Point or Anchorage Marina. Both have liveaboard communities. Anchorage is a condo marina so things can get complicated with slip owners, association, and management company. I'd look at BMC first.

ActiveCaptain is a separate site. It requires registration but is free. Outstanding resource: http://ActiveCaptain.com .

I believe Henderson’s Wharf and Baltimore Marine Center at Harbor View also allow liveaboards and have active communities. The nice thing about Anchorage is that it’s pretty easy to find private slip owners willing to rent for far less than the published rate the front office charges. In doing so you may be able to pay as little as half of what it would cost to be at the competitors’ properties.

Don't be surprised if they ask you what year house boat, some places restrict what comes in.

I have a slip at Anchorage and I believe there are quite a few liveaboards. It's a coop marina and there is an approval process for buying a slip that can be quite expensive. They do rent slips and some owners rent their slips. You could "try it out" and then if you like buy one there.

We lived aboard at the Baltimore Marine Center when we first moved to the area in 2003. It's a very nice marina, as is the Anchorage. Great location. There is a food market right across the street (Giant I think), lots of options for eating out you can walk to and the facilities at the marina are top notch. As with most marinas in the area they shut down the water to the docks in the winter. We had moved ashore before winter came so I am not sure how the liveaboards deal with that. Be aware it ain't cheap. And, depending on your tolerance for the loud party crowd, if you like things quiet you might try and get a slip that isn't right in front of the Bay Café.

Better bet: Magothy Marina just south (Severna Park). I've been a liveaboard there for the past 7 years. We have a good community and a nice marina.
