Live aboard - Adelaide, South Australia

Hi all,

I am intending to purchase a boat and to live-aboard for 12 months, somewhere in Adelaide, South Australia.

Does anyone know if any of the Marinas there are welcome to this.

Thanks
Garry

We are down south at Wirinna. I think legally here is no more than 72hrs.....but I now people have stayed for months, so not sure how strict they are.

Enquire at Siebel and Siebel(letting agents for berths in Refuge Cove) , North Haven.I know that arrangements for living aboard could be made a few years ago, though this may have changed.
Good luck Peter

Hi
I use to live in Port Pirie, but
too far from Adelaide, and its small and full.
Would be a challenge, used to be around places but getting limited and crowded.

Garry-The small boats club and Gardeners island support live aboard although its unofficial. At north haven there are a few live aboard again unofficially. The mariners like some live aboards as its good for security etc
There is always births to rent or buy at the above.
The cruising club and yacht squadron are a bit more strict on live aboards and police the 72 hour rule.
Best of luck

There is a very good Marina at Hindmarsh Island and they have a number of live-a-boards. Excellent facilities nearest small town Goolwa. 15 minutes walk.
You will find their prices very competitive,
It is called Hindmarsh Island Marina Google will give all details.

I had a yacht In Adelaide Marina. Their policy is no liveaboards but if you are 'OK bloke' they let you. This means that you have money in the bank, don't take drugs, don't drink piss all day long, don't hang washing out, don't keep your bike visible on deck ⛵️

Howdy Gazza We have lived on board for the last 2 years starting in the Pat for 2 months then Wirrina for 4 months then cruised the east coast to Cairns .The marinas mentioned do not allow live aboards I don't know any in the "Nanny State " that do . Present yourself as a tidy respectable person and fly under the radar as we did . Cheers Dave . Ps the east coast seems a lot more acceptable to live aboard life .

Hindmarsh Island definitely allow legal live aboards with electricity and excellent shower/washing machine and toilets

You dont say if you actually want to go sailing in your boat or just liveaboard. The Hindmarsh Island Marina promotes itself as the largest freshwater marina in Australia, which is probably true. Motor boats and small sailboats for daysailing are the main activity

But its real business is selling real estate along the canals and channels. It was extremely controversial and took many years and court cases to get approval.

It only has access to the shallow waters of Lake Alexandrina and the Murray River up to Albury. There is a lock to the hyper saline waters of the even more shallow Coorong but forget about ocean access. The Murray mouth is usually closed and not navigatableor being dredged just to keep some environmental flow.

Otherwise its nice windy place and nearby Goolwa is a lovely township.

The RSAYS at Outer Harbour do consider applications for live aboard. They are a very amenable lot down there.

Re: Live aboard - Adelaide, South Australia

Hi all, as this thread is now a few years old, just wondering if anyone has any updates on live aboard marinas in Adelaide? Or semi-live aboard. Ie not full time.

Thank you very much..
