Keys - July thru January

hello all!
my wife and i have just bought a boat in south florida. we are not able to pick it up until July. we were going to try to bring it up to GA. for hurricane season, but now we are thinking of staying in the keys and waiting it out in the heat...
i have a few questions.

1. Can anyone recommend a good place to live aboard moorings or marinas for a cheap rate? We have a 27 foot boat, and are looking for a place for less then $400 a month.

2. What do people with boats in the keys do in the event of a hurricane?

3. What can we expect as far as weather goes? i know it is hot and humid but is it unbearable?

4. Is this actually something that can be done? Is it crazy to stay in the keys during the summer months?

Many of the boot keyers stay here year round. Marathon city Marina will have space.
Hurricanes and storms are predicted in advance, be near your boat.
When a storm is predicted, put three lines on the mooring ball in the configuration detailed at the marina office. Then take all the windage off your boat: sails, bimini, etc.
Monthly rate should be around $360/mo.

City Marina/Boot Key has balls and an anchorage. There are also deals at other marinas in the area in the off season. Many places in the Keys have issues with finding a place to tie up your tender when going to shore. It costs almost as much to get dinghy/shower access and anchor out as it does to get a ball.

Last couple of years there were no hurricanes so I just stayed on the ball when not cruising. If worst comes to worst you can go to hurricane holes in the mangroves or maybe head to the Everglades.

Did I mention it gets humid as well as hot.

If you're going to correct someone's spelling/language, it pays to get your facts correct.

Homonym <> homophone.

Homonym - same spelling, different meaning.
Homophone - same sound, different meaning

Through/threw are homophones, NOT homonyms.

All homonyms are homophones because they sound the same. However, not all homophones are homonyms. Homophones with different spellings are not homonyms.

Thanks for the info on the Keys guys. BTW, what kind of depths are you talking when you mention the everglades. As in, what's the max reasonable draft to use them to go & hide in, should some "weather with a Name" be headed in your direction?

In Marathon go to Coco Plum (about MM 54). Go down Coco Plum to Avenue I. There are 10-12 slips there managed by Emil Swaiden. It is a great hurricane hole as there are mangroves all around to break the wind. No worries about finding a dinghy dock. Electricity, water, showers and toilet facilities. Great friendly neighbors. Parking for one car and a trailer. We were there 18mos and loved it. I don't have Emil's phone, but it is posted at the boat launch ramp.

And as for threw or through, who cares? We all new what he mint. :-)

If I recall correctly Little Shark River in the glades and considered a hurricane hole is about 15'.

A little additional food for thought on spending the hurricane season in the keys.
If you plan to insure the boat do your research on what the various insurance companies will or will not cover and the requirements they have relative to a vessel being within their defined hurricane zone and the "hurricane season". Typically they will require information and where the boat will be kept (e.g. mooring vs. approved marina) and normally require a "hurricane plan" - what you will do with the boat if a named storm event is headed your way.

They also typically define whether they will or will not cover the boat if it not in its home port if that home port is within the defined hurricane zone.

As an example a friend purchased a boat in N.C. and planned to bring the boat to S.W. Florida in June. The insurance company would not cover damages suffered while the boat was in transit that resulted from a named storm event.
Bottom line is things change and they are all a bit different in price and coverage so it pays to do the homework.
