Re: Just starting out - Please Advise

What engine does it have? How many engine hours? If no engine hour meter, ask to see the engine log. If he/she/they don't have one, at least have the engine oil analysed.

Somewhere here on CF there's a thread called something like "survey 101". It will give you heaps of help about what to look for and at on the boats. Best is to bring someone who is a friend, who is also boat savvy and who has a good eye for detail with you to help.

If you're not pulling my leg about your skill set, it is extremely well suited to boat ownership. Good on ya.

Re: Just starting out - Please Advise

No leg pullin' - just a handy pet to have around.

Engine 1 Yanmar, 4JH-TSE Turbo Inboard Diesel

Tanks
Fresh Water Tanks: Stainless steel (158 Gallons)
Fuel Tanks: Stainless steel (105 Gallons)
Holding Tanks: Stainless steel (15 Gallons)

Brief call to the broker today. Apparently no engine hours listed or log (why no hour meter? they cost about 10 bucks and are a 5 min install....) Have to get the oil checked....

Apparently the boat is in somewhat worse shape than its pictures reveal (probably always the truth), needs deck paint, and has some water staining on the woodwork from some leak inside. Asked about the last time the bottom was painted and it was "recent" - so I need to look at that a little more. I asked and apparently the chainplates and rigging are in good shape, but again there is only so deep one can dive in a 5 min call while trying to work from ones desk...

Going to look up the survey thread, see what is recommended and ask some more detailed questions via email exchange where I can keep better note of questions and replies.
