Internet in the Caribbean

I plan to buy a sailing catamaran in the Carribbean (Goudeloupe) and sail it around for a month or two (before moving it to the Med).

Need a reliable Internet connection aboard to keep up with my job, need to check e-mails/receive GSM calls and make calls on Skype.

What is the best cost/quality solution?
  • Land Wifi-s? Is it widely available on the mooring? Can install external wifi booster+antenna.
  • Cellular Internet? Is there GSM/GPRS/3G connection all around the islands? Between the islands? One roaming solution, or I have to buy a SIM on each island?
  • Satellite (expensive upfront and don't need it in the Med).
Thank you for your comments!

Re: Internet in the Caribbean

I have an Alfa booster and mini wireless router that are in a waterproof box on top of my bimini. You can buy it on amazon and put it together yourself for a fraction of the cost of buying the system ready made. You will need a 12v power source which for me was the cigarette lighter plug at the helm station on my catamaran. You will then have wireless internet to multiple computers inside the boat without having to run a cable inside and hard wire to a laptop.
Mine works great and pulls in signals from some distance away. The only problem is finding an unsecure network upstream.

Go with "Orange Internet Everywhere Guadeloupe", for 49 Euros per month; unlimited time and with no contract. Not sure if it is an air/thumb drive card connected through a USB port, though. Mauritz

In the St Maarten area you can find WiFi in every anchorage, some of the feeds are password secured by the bar/restaurant which carry them. Your best bet is to go there buy a beer and ask the bartender for the password, you can use it for months afterward.
I use bitstream antenna booster which gives me very good reception.
