Insurance for trans Ocean passage

I am insured with Pantellius. They insist on having 3 on board for ocean crossings. All very well but we really want to travel as a couple. Can anyone recommend an insurance company that will insure trans Ocean passages with only 2 onboard?

we did a 2 handed atlantic crossing in 2013 with imis -- we just did the Black Sea with imis - give them a try - we also do not take crew as we did twice and it was a disaster

My wife and I crossed the Atlantic in 2014 . We were, and still are, insured by Pantaenius USA. They raised our hull deductible before the crossing but imposed no other conditions.

A couple I know have just crossed the Atlantic with ARC, insured by Panteneus. However, he is a Yachtmaster Examiner and she is Yachmaster Offshore, so both very well qualified. An alternative you may wish to try is Admiral Marine Insurance.

We crossed the Pond insured with Admiral and they insisted on 4 competent people on board including one who was capable of taking over from me as skipper should anything happen to me. When pushed on what competent meant they said it was more about experience than qualifications. For the record I hold a commercial ticket but as they said not much use if I had a heart attack half way across!

If you want to Voyage single hand- Uninsured - A good reason to have an older, free & clear vessel.

Re: Insurance for trans Ocean passage

We use YYacht insurance and they are happy for us to cross as a couple.
Don't expect an instant response - they provide a 'bespoke' service, but We are very satisfied with them.

Hi, Chuckr

May I ask what went wrong when you took a crew crossing Atlantic? It would be good to know how to pick the right crew based on other experiences.

ooh this is so important! meet up or very least skype first. Then arrange a 'get to know us' sail before you decide on the crew you want. Go with your gut if there is something slightly annoying about them over skype or your trial sail you can bet you will thinking about chucking them over the side by the time you get to mid atlantic. I could write a book on this :-)

Re: Insurance for trans Ocean passage

We crossed the Atlantic while insured with Panteneus as a couple and they bumped our rate by a grand. I asked them to insure us until we were 100 miles offshore and then cancel it until we were 100 miles from the Caribbean but that didn't fly. We had close to 50,000 miles offshore at that time and it piss ed me off enough that we changed companies after our crossing. No problems sailing anywhere as a couple and lower rates plus it's with a Canadian company that you don't have to sue if you have a claim. Personally this insurance is a bit of a racket, all I ever carried in the past was liability as in 3rd party but I haven't found anyone that sells it at a reasonable price.
