Post Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

Hi all,

Does anyone have liveaboard insurance for their boat allowing them to actively cruise in the tropics during hurricane season, if so Who do you insure with and what does it take to get them to agree to it?

I'm doubting its even possible...

Thanks

G

I think if that's the case, take it as an indicator that it's not a good idea.

Losing all your "stuff" being the least of your worries. My friends down there head for closer to the equator for the season, one Costa Rica, the others toward southern coast of Venezuela, British Guyana.

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

There's more hurricane activity from 25* to 35* latitude than in the tropics and full coverage insurance is available In that region. Many boats remain in Florida with full coverage, but the rates are higher.

Tropical storms are brewed in the tropics, but most of their mature time and devastation is spent in the mid-latitudes.

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

Thanks for the reply,

I really don't think that I'd ever let an underwriters idea of risk dictate what I do John, that is not nor will ever be who I am, but I respect that some people have such a fear of risk that they may take that on board.

I'm just trying to minimize my exposure to loss, I'll be going regardless.

I know there are a lot of people out there who do not just go home during the hurricane season, some will go just outside the box, or have an insurer with certain conditions, this is the font of knowledge I am looking to draw from if it exists. If however, the reality is that these mavericks simply self-insure or use a 3rd party only plan of some kind, then so be it.

It's interesting to see the hurricane paths for the last 10 years, sadly insurers dictate where they cover, rather than where it is sensible in many cases...

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

We lived and kept our boat in Miami for several seasons and went though a bunch of hurricanes including Katrina and Wilma - we carried insurance and paid a bunch extra for being in the zone during the season

Once we sold up and sailed out we stayed out of the hurricane zone going first north on the east coast of the usa twice then to the western Caribbean for a couple of years then down to Trinidad for the last hurricane season we were in the Carribean -

We used YachtInsure with Bill Hodgens and/or IMIS

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

We live in southwest Florida and are insured by "Seaworthy", now a part of GEICO. Our limits of navigation are Maine to Brownsville, Tx including the Bahamas through the Turks and Caicos. With that coverage we have no calendar time limits vis-a-vis "Hurricane Season". Our premium is about 1.8% of our hull coverage on an agreed value basis for coverage.

FWIW...

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

We know a ton of people with this kind of insurance. Of course you will pay more.

Note that it won't just be "open" with no restrictions. You will be required to file a hurricane plan and stick with it to be covered during one. Common plans are to seak a marina, hauled out at a boatyard or tie up in a mangrove hole. You will need to be specific about it.

Check out the Europeon insurers. As for "In the box" insurnace.

Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

It easy, as Hudson said, all the boats that are insured in Fl that live there likely have Insurence during Hurricane season, If money is owed on the boat, its insured.
Mine is paid for, and stays in Fl year round, the deductible is higher for named storms, like $1,000 or so, which is fine by me cause I have Insurence for major events, not bumps and scrapes.

I was however told a couple of years ago by my insurer that if I declared myself a live aboard, he would have to find a different company to insure me. Living aboard is apparently frowned upon, but being on an extended cruise is not.
We begin extended cruising this May

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

I have had boat US for years. live aboard in Florida. n I don't think they ever asked about living aboard, just home base and cruising area (need to advise them if going Bahamas, Cuba still not covered). Hurricane coverage specifically included but might have a slightly higher deductible.

Try Novamar the a insurance broker. they provided insurance for Mexico for hurricane seasons along with the rest of the year.
I talked to Craig and he had no problems finding me insurance.

I have insured my last CSY in the hurricane zone in hurricane season for the past of 9 years, quite expensive , and Charter comps have their fleets insured in hurricane season in the hurricane box to, really expensive... depend if you are prepared to pay a nice Premium....

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

go to boatus.com and click on the insurance button...in the end it's gieco, but you get a discount if you are a boatus member. They'll cover you any which way and how you want, you just have to know what to ask for.

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

You might want to try Progressive. Much better rates in Florida than Boat Us and/or Geico.

Re: Impossible to get Insurance in Hurricane Season

Spend the money on more and better ground tackle instead. Sail your boat to where the winds don't blow during hurricane season.

A prudent mariner is his/her own best insurance.
