Re: ICW and big ugly horse flies

The debunking doesn't seem to follow any better scientific method than the "proving". Any volunteers to research this with scientific methods of controls, etc...

Re: ICW and big ugly horse flies

This is done all over Louisiana, most restaraunts, markets, homes...usually only outdoors. It comes from Voodoo culture (which explains it's existence in the Caribbean too). It does work, and scientist might be able to explain why, but it was originally invented as a magical remedy.

Re: ICW and big ugly horse flies

National Geographic told me , a long time ago, that flies have very poor definition thru eye sight. They can however, detect light movements and changes in their proximity. Ever notice when swatting flies, that you are more successful coming from the less-lighted side.
A blurred image may be interpreted to be a web, or some other danger.

I'm jus tryin

Re: ICW and big ugly horse flies

I am in the Cape Fear area now and no flies (We have had 3 all day - compared to the hundreds we where having that is nothing!). I have not taken to bag down today to try to see if they come back. We have a couple more hours underway - maybe I will give it a try. I will let you all know!!

Re: ICW and Big Ugly Horse Flies

Cool little trick, and I've seen it before. Just never thought about doing it myself!

The nerd in me is really curious as to WHY this works.

Repelling Bugs With The Essence Of Grapefruit : NPR

"This stuff has incredible knock-down," Dolan says, referring to an insecticide's ability to kill off bugs. "It kills very, very quickly, usually within a matter of about 15 seconds."
It kills by blocking receptors on insects' nerve cells for a neurotransmitter called octopamine. That makes the insects hyperactive. "They basically vibrate themselves to death," Dolan says.

Re: ICW and Big Ugly Horse Flies

[QUOTE=Cats Eye;707325]We have now spent over a month cruising up the ICW. I have seen my first alligator!! Dolphins are getting boring (not really!!) because we see then sooo often. I have seen beautiful butterflies and tons of great birds. Out of all the the wild life the one thing I can not stand are these big huge green head flies that bite. My husband has become the best fly killer ever!! I am assuming I am not the only person that has had this problem.

I did find a solution to my problem that I will share with all of you!!

A bag of water.

Never tried it myself but I have seen water bags hanging outside of homes and eateries in Italy. They swear that it does work so if I had a fly problem sure I would "hang the water bags".

Re: ICW and Big Ugly Horse Flies

Can the water baggers tell me if this remedy pertains to most all flies or just green heads?
Thx

My understanding from Italians is that it works for ALL FLIES, not sure about other bugs
Supposed to be caused by the light bending and reflecting through the water.....sunlight that is.

Re: ICW and Big Ugly Horse Flies

Old time sailors like Columbus used to carry horses on board. Good thing they didn't know the plastic bag trick or people in the new world would all have been walking around until someone invented the car.

Re: ICW and Big Ugly Horse Flies

When a few bugs sneak by your defenses into the cabin, you need to a different strategy - annihilation. Every boat should have these two essentials:

A fly shooter gun. Cheap, simple, and great for that "hunter spirit". Once you understand it's "kill" zone, you can kill about 10 bugs a minute with one of these. If you ever have youngsters aboard this can keep them busy for the whole evening.

Amazon.com: Martin Paul 100-75 Flyshooter The Original Bug Gun, Colors may vary: Automotive

Or go electric with a zapper. But not one of those wimpy things run by AA batteries. They just stun the bigger bugs. Get this high amperage one from "Murder the Bugs".
