I've been trying to think of a way to make an outboard diesel that is located inboard and is easily removed. But I don't have that, so I guess I'll live with what I do have.

Hi Don.

I have just finished reading this thread from page 1.. Awesome. Well done in both getting the boat, sailing away AND keeping the thread going. Nice job. Sounds like you are having a great time, learning heaps as you go. What I really like about your story is that it is warts and all, telling us all your mistakes. It's refreshing. We all make them, and some a lot more than others. (If you know what I mean). (See pics)

I did the whole "sell up and sail away" thing in my 20s on a Dufour 29 in the med. Best time of my life. Two years ago I got back into sailing and bought a Ross 40 down here in NZ. She's a handful and is certainly keeping me poor, but great fun. A bit of racing and a bit of cruising, but I hope to get further afield in the near future. I had hoped to get up to SF to watch Team New Zealand win the Americas cup (ducks for cover) but I haven't got the boat up to spec yet.

Please keep this thread going as it's a beauty, and your writing style is just great! Cheers, Smithy.

I told you all about my entrance to Wassaw Sound, with the breakers and cross currents. Here is the plot I recorded on OpenCPN.



The depths were a bit deeper since I came in at High tide, the lowest I saw was 11' (5.5' under the keel). This was within about 20' of the course I plotted on OpenCPN, then transferred to my Lowrance Chart plotter.

Wind, 15-25knts NNE; Seas, 5-7' NNE; Tide, just before full high; Time, sunset(7:25PM). Easy as pie, for someone that has never done it before and didn't know what a spot he would have been in if the fuel filters clogged like they did two days later.

I was very happy to see Red 10 go by.

Hindsight being 20/20, I should have gone in at the Savannah River.

I should say that I went out this same track just 4 months ago, I didn't think it would change too much. Other than that, see my signature.

I've been out Wassaw Sound on an easy morning, but I've more often come in at Savanna and cut up into the Calibogue Sound.

Calibogue Sound looks worse than Wassaw. Cut due north from the Savannah river entrance at G15, pass G3 close on your port, then between R4 & G5, correct? Looks awful skinny at G3. (I need 5.5')

Haha. Yeah I could have the same signature I reckon! Your stories of the ICW and limited room to move reminded me of going up the Rhone and Saone in France with the mast down back in the 80s.. Full flood waters coming down with trees and debris.. Very scary. Much scarier than the open ocean!! Like I said, love the narrative! Very inspiring.
