How to Make Ice Cream at Anchor

First, buy two 190 watt solar panels and 4 golf cart batteries, plus a Magnum 2000 watt inverter and a sub-panel for your outlets. Install all that stuff. Now go buy another 190 watt panel, two more 6v batteries, a Blue Sky charge controller and some big 2/0 wire and install it too.
Next you should procure a portable ice maker, I got a refurbished Igloo for $95.00 on ebay with free shipping. That's OK because it will take you a week to install the electrical stuff so the shipping time won't matter.
You'll need an ice cream ball as well, and a pint of cream, some sugar, and some vanilla. Oh, and rock salt.
Now just follow the directions on the ice cream ball about three hours after you started the ice maker and you'll fin that you have the world's finest fresh home made ice cream. Probably the world's most expensive, too.
You have to eat it all right now, though, because you don't have enough freezer space. Everybody knows that.

Re: How to Make Ice Cream at Anchor

But seriously, folks, you can put the cream and stuff in a smaller coffee can, put it in a larger coffee can and fill the space with ice and rock salt. Roll it until it freezes. You don't even have to be at anchor. Brings back ice cream memories. Headed back to the U.S., we didn't have enough Bahamian money for a pint of rum raisin at our last port of call iin the Abacos and the girl in the store didn't have any U.S. change. Sweetly she said, "You an 'ave the hice cream." What a sweetie. Instead we let her 'ave the U.S. money, keep the change.

Awwe, love my sweet bahamian sisters and that was very nice Janet. Ice cream can be important for crew morale....if you have a big boat, take a White Mountain cooler like I have on my farm, and take turns cranking. Me gusta helado!

That's a good one.

It would be a lot easier and less expensive to drag one of the old ice cream makers that I have stashed away out an put it on the boat. The hand crank one is old as I am but the electric one is new and both make about a quart of ice cream. You need room on the boat to stash an extra five gallon pail that won't bail water though.

Re: How to Make Ice Cream at Anchor

The ice cream ball doesn't use any electricity, it's just a ball with a lid on either end, one for the ice cream mix and another for the ice and salt. It's the ice that uses all the electricity.
Home made ice cream is the best, no commercially made ice cream is the same.
