We bought a Bayou side property 8 yrs ago with 110 ft of dockage, we had a 51 ft boat and rented 2 spots to shrimpboats. our cost is nill. power about 80 to 100 bucks a month, water and garbage is about 12 bucks. property tax nothing, as the cost was less then 75000 bucks. It's in hurrycane alley, but it's above the tide gates, and has been safe so far! and a very safe marina is only 15 miles up the bayou from us! Theres a bunch of waterfront in so Louisiana, if ya look online you might find some but ya need to see a local realtor to find what ya want !! just a thought

What does it go for an acre down there? Sounds nice that there is no land tax!

You should also ask if there is a Liveaboard fee attached to the slip rent. In Alameda, CA I paid $500 a month for a 50' slip and $200 per month liveaboard fee.

I love life on the hook... it's quiet, peaceful and relaxing, however at first it wasn't quite as nice. In the beginning (5.5 years ago) I didn't have all the accouterments I've gathered such as a wind generator, solar panels, windlass, etc. It was tougher then but I knew the goal always was to be not only self-sufficient but comfortable. Now my existence is nearly decadent -- and that's just the way I like it.

And, basically my expenses are fuel and food -- plus of course maintenance, haul outs and such. Also, each month I attempt to add to my creature comforts -- this past month I bought both an electric blanket (12 volts) and a new propane heater so life's pretty doggone comfy. I am very fortunate.

aren't most of those properties down there land leases?

Tom nailed it. It's the difference. Which still makes no sense to me.

Marinas should PAY liveaboards to stay there. Not ding them.

Well of course, you use more water, more power, more hot showers more garbage, etc, etc as a liveaboard. Now some places it's all metered and they still charge a bunch extra just cause they can.

There is tax on land or houses costing more then 75,000 dollars, and yes there are many leases, but most of them are more rural or in the marsh areas. We were lucky to get what we have!

In Texas coast marinas you pay $200-$400/month plus a liveaboard fee. Liveaboard fee is usually $40-$80 per month. Electric is also metered.

Our current marina is $300 + $60 liveaboard fee + Electric.

The two places I have been a liveaboard, where they charged an additional fees, the water and power were metered. We used the showers and head on our boat, so the only thing extra we were creating was waste.

I guess if we were like the majority of liveaboards we would have been using the showers and toilets everyday.

But does that justify the extra fee, probably not.

I'm not on a meter so the extra I pay for water, power, etc. seems legit. I really can't complain since I'm at the lowest end of your survey ...$250 and under for a 35 footer.

I'm confused. Your water to the boat was "metered" but you chose not to use the marina showers and toilets? Weren't you paying to shower on board and use the toilet on board when it could have been free?

My wife and I have our house up for sale and are planning on buying a boat and living aboard full time. We plan on spending some time in the Alameda area. Which marina were you in? We're looking at a Gemini 105 (34' Cat).

I just moved my boat to everett.wa.......been working on it for 6 month to get it ready for sailing down to mexico....I pay 200.00 plus 50.00 for liveaboard fee....I was paying 212.00 for living on the hard....which is cheap or not...always count on expensives...so you can't win....might same some money here and there....oh well...live is what it is... trying to live the dream
