How do you sleep?

My Bristol aft berth is athwartship, and sleeping is just fine. Most times when in a raucous anchorage, you are bow to and pitching, not rolling. When it get's that difficult, your not going to sleep well anyway. I find that rolling side to side my back muscles get very tight. I also enjoy the aft cabin, it just seems to give you your own space.

My 35' mono might be a bit small for a center cockpit/aft cabin, but my aft cabin with 1/4 berths fore/aft opens into the cockpit giving easy access to the wheel and sheets (or even just popping one's head up for a gander) when underway or at anchor. I even plan a modification providing a single queen in place of the two 1/4 berths.

Hi , Just buy the boat you really like , the amount of times you will be stuck in a bay with a side swell will be minimal. And as long as the weather is good you can always move. In 40 years of sailing I have probably suffered ten bad nights. Pick a great boat that you love and is easy to live on not just sleep on. In transit the lower and closer to the centre the better so sleep in the salon. You will spend more time sailing , swimming and living than you will sleeping so pick what is important to you . How much hunting have you done? I have seen but a few aft cabins with athwart ship layouts.

Ours is a double berth (bow to stern oriented) in the back cabin and we have just as good a night sleep at anchor as we do at home if not better. Also able to convert the dinette into a double berth for guests and this we also occasionally use when in transit. Both are comfortable.

We have athwart in the aft cabin and deckhouse, fore and aft in the midship cabin, deckhouse and settees. I find that I am like Goldilocks some nights, particularly if the wind changes at anchor. I wander around the boat and try each bed for comfort. It's never predictable to me, each has its own distinct feel, depending on the distance from the centre of the boat, the height above the waterline and, of course the lateral orientation and how each of these combines with the sea state.

The point being, if there are just two of you I'd look at boats that present plenty of options, even if some of the options are single beds. Let's face it, if you are under way only one of you is going to need a bed anyway.

I have slept both along and athwart. I must admit, when rolly, I found it actually way more comfortable to sleep along.

When on a cat, I can sleep in either direction (at anchor).

I had a 1994 Hunter Legend 35.5 with aft cabin and huge transverse bunk...big enough for my pregnant wife, large dog, 2 year daughter, and me, with space to spare for a few laundry baskets of clothes. We almost always anchored, and slept very well. I agree, under sail a fore and aft bunk is preferred, although my dog would sleep in the aft cabin under sail, and she never complained...except when I started the engine, which was right next to her...BARK!

As others have mentioned, the 40'+ Jeanneau SO line offer a massive aft cabin. The one on our 43DS has a king size bunk and I can walk erect along the foot (fwd) part of the bunk. If you're looking for a good size master cabin with easy access to the bunk, as we were, you're not limited to centre cockpits.

I really hate rolling around at anchor so I have rigged up a snap in hammock , right above the centre line of the bow to stern queen size berth

It works really well and I get a great nights sleep wherever I am

You know I have always wondered about this too when I see aft cabins like that! And as someone mentioned, where I am cruising the anchorages can get rolly at times. I always hang a set of rocker stoppers, which helps a lot. But if you see a boat you like with that set up, why not ask if you can do a sea trial at night with lots of chop and have someone steer the boat for maximum roll and see how it goes? I love quarter berths but I also wondered about trying to sleep back there while underway. What, do you end up as a lump on the leeward side?
