How critical is 4 inches?

Head Banger, No Brainer

For day sailing & racing, a low ceiling height would not be a problem, But living on your boat day & night, adequate headroom is critical.

I stay on my boat about 40% of the time. In my opinion adequate "head room" is a necessity throughout the boat's cabin, and above your bunk.
My IP has a head room of 6 '4" (minimum of 6"). Top of all door jams is 5' 11". I"m 5 '9" (about 5 '10" in tennis shoes). I DO NOT enjoy hitting my head!!! While at the dock or at anchor, I want room to move freely throughout, without slightest notion of banging my head. One of the main reasons why I choose my sailboat, "livability".

I even installed nylon webbing hanging down from the companionway hatch to decrease whacking my noggin when exiting the cabin.

I know personally that I would not accept living conditions that did not allow me to stand upright. It's one thing to duck into an enclosure for a few minutes and have to be bent over...to live that way constantly I would consider it totally unacceptable.

Seem as though the majority say. Find a boat with head room.

What boat, or what size boat are we talking about?
I am 6'2" (186 cm) tall.
Previous boat was a CSY 33, generous head room for guys 6'6" or so.
I was always comfortable and would not have accepted less.
As in Hell No...

You should be able to stand straight at least in some parts of the boat.

Thank goodness there's an advantage of being 5'8" tall. You tall fellows makes more money, so you should be able to afford a boat that fits you.

I'm 6'4" and my boat has 6' headroom. I can make it work, as most of the time your not standing anyways.

As I recall, six-foot headroom was standard for "stand up" boats in the sixties.

If you can have full standing height, at least in the kitchen area, that's a big plus.

I can only stand up where a hatch is open, 10+ years by now, no issues.

Not critical then but sure very nice to have.

FYI: Hunter 34 1983 = 6ft 5in Headroom

A very common boat, not too expensive.

Many other boats have 6' 3" headroom.

Some older boats from the 1980s will have 6' 5" or even more.

Sorry if you didn't get the point of bashing your head often with inadequate head room. The helmet was, I thought, obviously said in jest.

Thanks for all of the replies!! It took me a little while to decide to look around more, and it was the advice on this forum that pushed me over. So I will keep looking, I know we will find the right boat! its just a matter of time and patience.
