Homeschooling curriculum suggestions

We are heading out this fall for 2 years of coastal cruising within our 10 yr old (5th grade) and our 13 yr old (8th grade). I am looking for curriculums at work for gifted students. We are not relying on having Internet access the entire time so the online option won't work ( unless someone has a economical Internet suggestion). I think i have math figured out (Saxon) and have picked up a spelling and reading program but really am stuck on which is best for science, history/social studies, and language arts. There is so much out there it is really overwhelming. We are all so excited to get started and will head south from Florida in November!

Not sure where you are in Florida but the Broward county public school system is very helpful with advice for homeschooling parents. There is also a huge homeschooling community there as well.

Re: Homeschooling curriculum suggestions

We have been homeschooling for 17 years and I've used ABeka, Bob Jones and Sonlight - although all have a Christian angle and not sure you want something like that.

I've known many who have been happy with Calvert as well. Saxon is wonderful and get the DIVE or Saxon CD to go with it so you bring a math teacher with you. It's well worth the extra $50!

The State of Florida has a free home school . Just get a Florida address, by hook or crook . I believe it is internet or mail based . Google it ?

Hi,
We are moving aboard in October and starting home schooling as well. 6th and 8th grade. I am so overwhelmed by all the research I have been doing. Let's keep in touch!

If you can get to one, the state homeschool conventions are a fantastic way to look over curriculum.

Re: Homeschooling curriculum suggestions

My kids are a lot younger but I'm having better luck with this route (which I think I got from others on here). Go here: Content Standards - Standards & Frameworks (CA Dept of Education) to give yourself some targets. Gifted or not, all kids have different interests and challenges so you can have a degree of flexibility.

Grab workbooks and study materials pertaining to the proficiency required for whatever goals. If they need to learn calculus 1, the best books are rarely part of an official curriculum.

Some people love the more structured curriculum, others prefer shaping their own. We like the latter with our young children, using the California standards as a way of benchmarking where our kids are at.

Re: Homeschooling curriculum suggestions

All 4 of our kids were schooled with Calvert. This was in the days of no internet!! they were schooled by snail mail, and they were in this program till high school, none of them had any problems with there education, all got great SAT scores and 3 went to collage, one went to a marine school. All graduated. just make sure ya keep tract of what they are doing ! and things will work out !! At least it did for us !

Re: Homeschooling curriculum suggestions

I have to say we will be taking a different approach.
we will boat school 12 months a year, and progress thru grades as rapidly as he can manage.
I hope by the time he turns 18 he will have 4 college years of math/science/english under his belt already.
We will be going with Christian curriculum. I cannot stand to read about the dogmatic views of science.
