Hippie haul out

Hello all, recently my brother got his hands on a pair of Islander 32" sailboats. The original intent was to strip one down and meld the two together, but since then we've decided to fix up the boats together.

One major job we need to take care of is cleaning and repainting both hulls of our boats. We are considering beaching the boats to paint them on shore but without advice where should we do it?

Does anyone know a nice beach for a hippie haul out near Morro Bay California or inside the San Francisco bay?

How would one find a good beach in an emergency or without being able to talk to locals for information?

For vocabulary, we're talking about careening here.

Absolutely illegal to do what you intend in California, not to mention being an environmentally damaging dick move.

Whereas scraping ablative bottoms underwater in a marina year after year wins the cheerful steward award

I don't "scrape" any anti fouling paint, ablative or otherwise. Regardless, in-water hull cleaning is not illegal and is in fact, a necessary part of boat maintenance here. Neither can be claimed as true for careening on a beach and prepping and painting a boat bottom.

Just curious DjImprov, how many usernames are you and your "brother" going to create? Either way, you might check out this link:

Sailing Training Wheels: Careening the Boat

pretty sure that's Morro Rock in the photos. The blog talks about doing it for inspection, which, AFAIK is still legal, even in California (would love to see chapter and verse that says it's not). Scraping and possibly discharging fresh bottom paint, probably not so much. You'll have better luck in the fishing towns like Morro Bay and Moss Landing than you will in the yachting towns.

Rum and tonic would surely cure most sinus problems.

I don't know what you mean to say with that, my Brother and I are just beginning to work on these boats and I'm just doing some research to help out.

I didn't realize prep and paint couldn't (or should I say shouldn't) be done on a beach. Obviously in-water hull cleaning would take place first, but then there is the matter of a leakey thru hull that could be fixed after careening the boat onto shore.
