Hello looking to move on a sailboat somewhere

Hello all! I'm looking into moving on a sailboat somewhere! Where do you recommend I go? I currently live in Tennessee. I'm 36 I am in construction. I'm looking for a fun place to live on a sailboat and love the ocean so any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated!

Re: Hello looking to move on a sailboat somewhere

Nick, I spent 20 yrs working in E. Tenn and 10 years sailing and living on a boat in Miami!

Miami/Dinner Key has a good mooring field in Coconut Grove that you can live in and Coconut Grove Sailing Club www.CGSC.org is a blue collar sailing club that is cheap to join and where you can improve your sailing skill. CGSC has a mooring field but live aboards are not allowed.

From Coconut Grove you can easily explore the Keys and the Bahamas as your skills improve.

Coconut Grove is a lovely place to live but most importantly the standard in the local construction work force is marginal and a good skilled worker will not have a problem getting work especially as a private fix-it-all guy.

PM me and lets us communicate! I will certainly trade carpentry on my boat for sailing lessons.

We presently are a live aboard in Seattle WA, which I would not recommend, unless you are a wantabe vampire. When I retire we are thinking about moving to warmer drier climate. First choice is San Francisco bay area which is fairly large protect water, the north east is fresh/brackish water, and the weather is warmer drier.

I didn't pick one of your choices because I don't know what the construction industry is doing in each. I'd pick a place where you would have employment year round and that enjoys good marinas and actually likes boaters. Unlike Hawaii.

John, I lived at the AlaWai for many years, what is it like on the Big Island?

Re: Hello looking to move on a sailboat somewhere

I said Seattle, but mostly because I think there is a load of construction going on and nice protected week(end) Cruising around. I live in Portland, because of work but sailing on the river lacks variety. Finding a live-aboard slip was easy in Portland (~$350-400/mo) and I found it more difficult to find and expensive in Seattle. Of course it rains in the PNW, and it's probably cold by your Tenn standards, but I live aboard year round.

If San Diego has construction jobs, it is close to Mexico and boy howdy! good weather. Cost of living could be a shock though.

Would you be interested in living on my boat in the Florida Keys in exchange for your carpentry and painting experiance?
