Health/Medical Insurance

Hi,

What's the best way to go about insurances with a live aboard and sailing around the Caribbean?

Having looked at a number of offerings, We have just taken out medical insurance with Bishop Skinner Marine see below. £720 per year for the two of us

We are from the UK as well, which may limit some offerings

Others we looked at
Cigna were really expensive and when they discovered we lived aboard and moved around they ran away

DAN offer emergency cover only

Re: Health/medical insurance

It doesn't cost a lot to get DAN (Divers Alert Network) insurance which mainly supplements your primary coverage with a medevac plan.

Previous discussions about insurance on CF it seems like insurance coverage for anywhere in the world except the USA is 25-50% of the cost of US medical insurance. If you will be exclusively outside the US and in an area where you can get good medical care you might consider this option.

Re: Health/medical insurance

Just noticed your location is the UK. I don't think DAN offers coverage for non-US residents.

loads of option , if you are UK resident, BUPA does a relatively cheap word wide ( excluding US) insurance. You can also access any EU wide private insurance of which there are many ( like VHI global in Ireland for example)

Costs typical under 1K per person for comprehensive coverage

As your UK, you typically will not have any private domestic insurance, so ensure that you don't look at "top-up" insurances schemes.

Re: Health/Medical Insurance

Pretty good news on health insurance costs. For this 6 mo.cruise, we have coverage from IMG again. Good everywhere except in the US. $2500 deductible for the both of us. $200 per month total for both. $100k max. In the US you probably couldn't get your finger fixed for that much but where we're going, brain surgery.
