Re: Has Anyone Thought of Creating a Protected Marina in the Ocean?

Just because you are thinking outside the box does not mean you can't come up with a silly idea. Economically not feasible.

Some people in here remind me of those people talking to Orville Wright... "You want to do what?" "Are you crazy?"

The problem with these kind of comments, if for every Orville, there are 10,000 crazy cousin eddies.

Orville had played with gliders for some time and had a mechanical background before trying to build a plane. So far the OP hasn't demonstrated a background to suggest he has thought out a plan (watching waterworld doesn't count as having a background or a plan).

So far this is much less wright brothers, much more flying bicycle guy.

First define the parameters, it's relatively easy to build a fixed platform 3nm from land, it's amazingly difficult to build one floating 2500nm from shore in the open Atlantic.

Duhhhh?

"Orville had played with gliders for some time and had a mechanical background before trying to build a plane. So far the OP hasn't demonstrated a background to suggest he has thought out a plan (watching waterworld doesn't count as having a background or a plan).
Orville enrolled at Dayton Central High School. Never especially studious, Orville was more interested in hobbies outside the classroom than school, and, thusly, dropped out of high school during his senior year and opened a print shop. Having worked in a print shop over the summer, he quickly went to work designing his own printing press for the shop. In 1889, Orville began publishing the West Side News, a weekly West Dayton newspaper. Wilbur served as the paper's editor." ...Google search

Re: Has Anyone Thought of Creating a Protected Marina in the Ocean?

Quote: "OK, here's an outside the box idea......how's about we REDUCE THE POPULATION?"

Usta have that conversation with my Business and Society stoodes 40 years ago - many of them "Visa Students" from "South East Asia" Do the math as to what had just happened in their world back then.

Three scenarios:

1) Trust to a natural disaster. At least that is "value neutral", but HIV didn't cut it, Ebola didn't cut it, and I doubt that Zika will cut it, so that leaves us two options:

2) Give a war. 40 years ago we'd just tried that (again!) and we are still trying it, and we STILL find that little men in black PJs or white shalwar kameez will run the "Finest Military Force The World Has Ever Seen" into the sea (again and again!).

3) Call for volunteers. There wasn't a whole helluvalot of enthusiasm for that idea either in among my students of in the last place it was tried. The nation that then (ca. 1942) saw itself as "Finest Military Force The World Has Ever Seen" found that to make any headway at all, it had to "volunteer" you, you and you! We are still living with the consequences of that!

Maybe we'd better cycle back to Option 1! Global Warming anyone :-)?

Re: Has Anyone Thought of Creating a Protected Marina in the Ocean?

Negative, people. I have done the numbers already for two cases:

- a floating marina, docked on the shelf,
- a floating marina, off the shelf.

The numbers are NOT what you think. You are messing around in the dark. Sit down, google, add and multiply. Look at similar constructions - start with submersible docks, ocean barges and oil rigs. Allow for all known factors, add a margin for the unknown ones. Do not shoot out figures that have zero base in reality.

Location: this one is simple - the best shops are the ones on the corners of very crowded streets. Nothing new under the sun. Plain vanilla business thinking.

If anybody has the money, show it to me. I will show you my findings. I will accept 0.1% of net revenues as my share in the pie. Cayman plc account.

Please apply in a neat line, do NOT jump the queue, refrain from killing your fellow bidders ....

Re: Has Anyone Thought of Creating a Protected Marina in the Ocean?

About ten years ago, I helped a guy build a floating island out of trash.

I've been back a couple of times since, and he's been living on it happily, oblivious to the internet experts.

We seem to have a lot of experts here as well, so I propose that we break this into two groups. One that knows how things should be done, and another for the people who want to go out and build this thing!
