Harbor Patrol inspection question?

I officially got my live aboard acception in my marina and need to get Harbor Patrol permit so i have an inspection coming up. what sorts of things will they be looking for?

My guess is fire extinguishers, holding tank requirement with working diverter valve, flares, horn, bell or whistle, pfd's, throw able pfd, engine compartment fan, discharge placard. what am i missing? does that pretty much cover everything?

Re: Harbor Patrol inspection question?

All depends on where you are located. what the heck is "Harbor Patrol" anyway?

Where I am all you have to do it get into a marina that allows liveaboards, nothing more. And setup to deal with Canadian Winters!

southern california. harbor patrol is basically a low level security force that oversees most of the marina's here. i dont know their history specifically but everyone in the marina basicaly answers to them and they oversee its safety and compliance issues...hence the inspection. you technicaly are not allowed to live aboard a vessel without their ok. all the marinas here require a document from them saying your boat is good-to-go before they will officially grant you live aboard status.

Sorry, just curious, feel free to let others answer.

Is it a private company?

Jurisdiction at the county level, municipal or state-wide?

Harbor Patrol inspection question?

Id call them and ask.
Most inspectors are pleased that your proactively preparing for their inspection.
Do you have to have this inspection if your at anchor? How long at anchor before your not a transient?

good question...iv'e never really thought about it, they have always just been here in all the local ports. i just assumed they existed in every port. i found this entry on wiki about the long beach H.P. which answers some questions. seems they govern local matters but work with or give way to federal authorities.

Start by getting a Courtesy Inspection by the CG Auxiliary. This is no cost, no fines and you will receive a signed checklist approval and a sticker for the coach top. This generally gets you a pass by most of the regular type inspectors.

I suggest you might need a lock out on the Y valve.

Yep, yet another level of Police that came about as a result of 911.
Id guess as the terrorist threat never really materialized, it has morphed to stay in existence, finding a mission so to speak and is now inspecting live aboards?

Here in Little Creek VA if they even think you are not making the turn out to the bay they will come speeding up to you with their siren and lights going. (bored sailors on duty) Thankfully no one is manning the machine gun though

They have them over where the carriers park also .....basically patrolling Naval Station Norfolk and Little Creek Joint Expeditionary Base

But this is Navy Harbor Patrol

They use similar boats to escort the Carriers, Subs, and Ships out to the ocean and in to the base. They hail lots of boats with their lights on keeping them out of their restricted areas around the ships

But but all the terrorist would have come if they hadn't set it up!

I imagine sniffing for anthrax, geiger counter in the bilge.

Re: Harbor Patrol inspection question?

US Navy and other military services are prohibited from being used domestically. The Navy is not specifically, but generally follows the Army in that requirement.
You will see the US Coast Guard doing things that no other Military branch can or will though due to the fact that they do not fall under DOD.

I would be very surprised to see an automatic weapon on any Police vessel, although the Dept of Homeland Security and CBP etc. concern me.
