Hammock?

I searched and didn't see any threads discussing sleeping in hammocks.

Does anyone do this? Seems like a decent way to keep cool and minimize rolling issues when sleeping?

It even seems to me it would be nice to have one in the pit for long passages.

Re: Hammock?

It was common practice for crew on traditional sailing vessels, but very uncommon today. The most common use for hammocks (very small ones) aboard modern sailing vessels is for gear, fruits, and veggies.

Many do use hammocks for lounging around above decks when at anchor though. Hung on the foredeck for example. We rig two from each side stay and the forestay.

I use hammocks a lot more ashore, both for relaxing and for sleeping when camping/kayaking. I have a Henesy Expedition hammock for this use.

Re: Hammock?

The vertical space taken makes designing storage space, shelving lockers bench tables very awkward.

For back sleepers, maybe fetal-side kinda.

Elderly get difficult getting in and out.

Very rare couple can sleep together.

Need under-insulation in cool weather.

I clearly did not!

Thank you, that gets much better results. I will try to remember that.

Re: Hammock?

We used to carry a backpacking hammock, but never did use it much. They're not really comfy for sleeping, to me anyway, but it was nice to lounge on the foredeck in the breeze.

If the cat at the end of the OP's name means he'll be buying a cat, a hammock might be more comfortable on a cat than a mono. But to control movement at sea, you'd need swinging room, and that doesn't go well with storage. I think one is better off in a snug sea berth, with a lee board or lee cloth. At least, my body wants to feel secure, not like "down will come baby, cradle and all".

Re: Hammock?

Will most likely not be buying a cat.

My first goal is to do the great loop to get used to the boat and sailing.

Then to go blue.

Might end up being two different boats, but might not.
