Dont get me wrong, I am not suggesting you shouldn't be able to enjoy a beach late at night, but if you live in a land where this sort of thing happens it probably best not to put you and yours at risk.
A bit like dont go swimming at dusk in areas where sharks are known to frequent.
Yeah sure, just like in our case... I guess it was our fault for living in a nice house in a crappy neighborhood. I was sitting in my living room talking on the phone when the perp tried to break through our front door. One never knows when the SHTF, it can happen anywhere... even to folks who take all the precautions. Don't go blaming the victims.

There are other cruisers here on the forum I know personally who've been assaulted and have used guns to protect themselves while onboard. Most women, don't wish to re-live the encouter. For personal reasons, several of them have decided not to share their stories online in a public forum. Just because there are few stories posted, doesn't mean it never happens.

My earlier comment was based on this story of an Australian Yachtie who figured not declaring his guns was a good idea.
He did spend a few months in jail for his trouble.
yes i remember that, his crew who had some imagined grievance dobbed him in.
the indonesians not wanting too lose face with big brother australia went through the motions of keeping australia happy, then quietly released him a few month later after the news had lost interest.......and let him carry on on his otherwise innocent passage

Well put. On my boat I have never had a problem. I can't say the same for being on land; had I had a firearm of some sort on me at the time, perhaps the assault would not have occurred. I think one is probably less likely to have a problem afloat than in an urban setting--at least I feel more secure on board.

Well it obviously made you a target.

I live in an outwardly crappy house with nice stuff inside for us in a relatively crappy neighborhood by Australian standards .
The thieves never bother us but the nice house over the road has been targeted several times.
A bit like that nice new dinghy and outboard being the first to be stolen yet the same nice new dinghy made to look crappy (yet the same underneath the hood) gets left alone.

The same theory is used with great success when we travel overseas.
We never wear bling or carry expensive phones, tablets and handbags when on the street and have never been targeted in over 20 years yet other travelers seem to get robbed regularly.

Re: Gun Question, part 2

A few quotes; "Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another:
reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice
of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under
threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two
categories, without exception."

"The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal
footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with
a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload
of drunken guys with baseball bats."

"When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but
because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I
cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but
because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those
who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who
would do so by force. It removes force from the equation - and that's why
carrying a gun is a civilized act. "

By Maj. L. Caudill USMC (Ret.)

"So, the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and
can only be persuaded, never forced. "

THE BEST PRO-GUN ARGUMENT I HAVE EVER READ

I rest my case your honor...

Re: Gun Question, part 2

A gun doesn't put anyone on equal footing. It only gives the illusion of equal footing.

That being said, the US is where I currently live and currently the only place I have been shot at or been threatened with physical violence. I've also lived and traveled outside the US quite a bit, although not by boat, and me and my significant other have never found ourselves in a threatening position.

I feel like firearms cause a lot more problems than they solve and do not feel the need to own one, especially for use outside of the US.

Sorry, I have a life and had more important things to do.

I thought I could leave you and your mates alone to angrily foot stamp, grunt and wave your guns in peace for a while but perhaps not.

Enjoy the rest of your day/night , I really do have more important things to do.
