Sea Wolf.... I think it was a mini series of Jack London's book.

Re: good boat movies?

Just a heads up, two sailing movies that are NOT to be watched by someone you are trying to get into the sailing life...Dead Calm and Open Water 2.

"Captain Blood"...shot at the Baths in Virgin Gorda, BVI ...and "The Sea Hawks"...both movies feature Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland...High seas piracy at its best!
"Never Let Me Go"...Clark Gable smuggling out of Russia, a ballerina. "Son of Fury"...Tyrone Powers reclaiming his wealth. Mauritz

Re: good boat movies?

Dove , for those of you that think about cruising in small boats. I watched Dove soon after I came back from 2 years in Mexico, Marquesas,Tahiti and Hawaii in an engine less 26 foot boat. The scene (maybe opening scene?) near the beginning , which showed him down below at night with the kerosene lamp swaying back and forth sent chills down my spine. It was so real. There was a fair amount of Hollywood BS in the rest of the movie, but it is surely worth seeing. The scene of him throwing an anchor and a heap of chain off of the bow was the worst, but it was still a good movie.____Grant.

Re: good boat movies?

Not that it was a movie, but what about the TV series "Adventures In Paradise". with Gardener Mckay. When I was a child in the 50s and early 60s my Dad always watched Adventures In Paradise. It was some great stuff. I wonder if it is still available on one of the nostalgia sites..Maybe that series is what put the wanderlust in my blood(much to my late Mothers dislike). Better than watching video games on your IPAD. ____Grant.

Captain's Courageous - Old movie with a great storyline that captures the heyday of the Grand Banks Fishing Schooners.

Dead Calm is a real favourite!
Particularly since it was filmed in the Whisunday islands on the NE coast of Australia. Most of the scenes of open water were shot out of Butterfly Bay, a spot I just love!

Re: good boat movies?

Nims Island is a good one, not alot of sailing, but some good open water sailboat repair after a hurricane.

Kon Tiki, not sailing per se, but 9 guys take off from the coast of Peru in a hand made raft, and sail it to Polynesia.
