The Secret of Roan Inish

The Secret of Roan Inish is an American/Irish independent film written and directed by John Sayles, and released in 1994. It is based on the novel The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry, by Rosalie K. Fry.[1]
It is centered on the Irish and Orcadian folklores of selkies—seals that can shed their skins to become human. The story, set on the west coast of Ireland, is about Fiona, a young girl who is sent to live with her grandparents and her cousin Eamon near the island of Roan Inish, where the selkies are rumored to reside. It is an old family legend that her younger brother was swept away in his infancy and raised by a selkie. Part of the film takes place in Donegal.

Check these threads, too. The first one is probably the most complete:

Re: good boat movies?

"Deep Water" which is the story of the 1968 Round the World Race, but mainly concentrates on Donald Crowhurst. Documentary rather than movie.

It's available on Netflix via stream on your computer or Smart TV.

Just added The Dove to my instant queue. Watched the 2012 Treasure Island, has some good sailing shots and the island reminded us of some Bahama islands.

Wind. Plot is a little lame and predictable but there are some great sailing scenes.

Re: good boat movies?

+1 on "Riddle of the Sands". You can watch it on You Tube in sections. Spies, WWI, the spooky shoals of the low countries.
