Desperate viewers might enjoy Joe and the Volcano with Meg and Tom. I have several unappreciated favorites that I can't recall the names of but I'd say one of my all time favorite "boat" movies is Mr. Roberts with Henry Fonda. You'll laugh, you'll cry. It's not a war movie, and the vessel is small enough to relate to. The Caine Mutiny with Bogart and Van Johnson fits in this same category of not a war movie.

Joe Vs. the Volcano. That's a very nice boat, and it was recently on the market. San Juan Island Sailing Charters got her and did a massive refit, I posted pics quite a while back on the forum. She's the Spike Africa.

Thanks. I'd forgotten. What a beauty! I've heard of Spike Africa but thought he was an American movie director. You folks that saw the old Gardner McKay TV series are oldsters. Ask me how I know. I recall thinking that was pretty good stuff.

No, Spike was a famous sailor, everyone on the west coast knew this guy, he was a legend. The boat was named in honor of him.

Yep, I should have known him. Just can't recall. I was in high school when Sterling Hayden took off. Hollywood was 20 miles north. It was big news. It was common in those days to see movie "stars" and we didn't follow them around. They really were just folks.

The "Pres of the Pacific Ocean" rings a bell but I think I've had my bell rung too many times.

Younger folks might refer to Spike's Story » Spike Africa's. Nice neat read.

Re: good boat movies?

Spikes Story was a great read. I knew about him as Haydens first mate , and as President Of The Pacific Ocean, but didnt know any of the other history. His son Kit Africa was a traditional wooden boat builder in Sausalito in the 70s and maybe the 80s. As a kid, I watched every episode of Adventures in Paradise that was on. What years were the Gardner Mckay series on? I would love to see them again. YES I AM F#$%ing OLD._____Grant.

Re: good boat movies?

There is a new film with Robert Redford that has drawn raves at the Cannes film festival this month. Called “All Is Lost” it is about a solo sailor whose boat strikes a semi submerged container (- my own worst fear). The film has very little dialog and only one actor (Redford) for most of the movie, as he battles to keep his boat afloat.

Unfortunately we will not get to see it until next fall.
