Going Liveaboard (ish) - End of March (ish)

AKA swapping Armchair for a Deckchair .


Although I can't blame Indy (Cruising on $500 per month) for my decision to go liveaboard his thread certainly hasn't done any harm .....As per my Sailing Away for a Dollar a Day thread the idea has been in the back of my mind for a few years anyway.

I like a bit of a challenge, and to be honest am doing SFA else with my life at the moment (nor in recent years )....so come end of March (ish) will be found aboard the S/v Wayluya - living on a serious (low) budget and with no shore power electrickery......and possibly no WIFI (I haven't checked that out yet).



I will be on a fore and aft drying mooring, so also no 24/7 walk ashore - only when the tide is out!

Although I suspect I am deluding myself!, at the moment I find it hard to see how I won't easily be able to do so on $500 (£500?) a month - even though I do live in a very high cost location (an Island with a Per Capita income that makes us No.6 in the world (UK 27! - US 9).....at least per the CIA Factbook....with the associated high cost of living).

Nonetheless I will be cheating - as will still have some onshore accomadation (and that won't be counted in my figures), initially at least that will provide a large Fridge / Freezer, a Washing Machine, some storage and a workshop. and a Microwave and a shower / bath.....and if needed, a bed. The intention is to cut down on the need for these over time - but initially won't be shy about using all of 'em! I will also have some onshore transport (Scooter only - Triumph presently poorly ), but with access to a car......all that will probably mean I get kicked out of the Liveaboards Club - before I even join! - but I figure the secret to a low budget is using whatever resources one can lay one's hands on .

What I want to do is nail down my living (and boat) expenses to the absolute minimum (but without going all hairshirt) - my bet is that even staying local (ish - France counts as local!) there will be a learning curve ($$$) until things settle down (aka I learn WTF I am doing / what works for me).....plan is also not to give up making money, but to do as little as possible - ideally being to end the year with more in the bank than when I started .

That earning money thing will be my biggest challenge - as also want to rejig how I earn my money (been working on that for the last 6 months or so), so not so dependent on boots on the ground - I suspect that may well involve making less - but day to day never been a big spender......unless Beer and Women are involved , but nowadays not much of either of those in my life......but that's on my "to do list" .

But if the $$$ end goes well will treat the boat for the next years adventures (once I have decided what they may be) if that end goes really well, might also head off to the sun for the Winter (sans boat!) - it's been a few years, since the last great DOJ overseas adventure .

The slight fly in the ointment is to get away from the dock by end of March won't have done everything I ever wanted to do - but has slowly dawned on me that was never going to happen anyway , so after having had a long hard scratch of the brain with a pencil, I have come up with a 4 week to do list - and using the power of FITIGE I figure that the rest can wait........plus I will need something to do anyway during the summer (apart from a personal "to do list" that largely involves sitting in my Deckchair - on deck )....after the Summer (Sept?), will see how I feel about staying aboard.

Didn't understand much of what you said, slang or humor missed the mark, but sure is a nice looking boat, I really like twin keels and wish we had more of the here. Good luck in your quest!

tis a fine vessel!
a 3g or 4g dongle about £30 a month should sort out the interconnectedness of things.

bilge keels ideal for those trips to france,though reccomend loading up with cheap booze when the boat is floating to avoid overloading and sinking!

T-31 (today)....set off for boat - got halfway.....

Realised I had forgotten to buy tin of paint .
Checked pockets - no money
Checked pockets again - no Ciggies
Divert to town for an ATM.
Bumped into Father and got chatting.
Bought tin of Paint
realised was nearly lunchtime - went back home to eat.
enroute realised Scooter was running on fumes
stopped at Petrol Station & also bought ciggies
arrived home
cooked lunch (soup & sandwich )

A good rule of thumb I go by is if you leave the dock/mooring with 80% of what you wanted to get done on board consider it a success. Once on board I find I tend to do a lot of staring/observing so sometimes things I thought I'd do sometimes never get done when I thought I'd be doing them. So now I just go with the flow and remind myself to enjoy the simple privilage of being able to to be on a boat. Enjoy!

You've mentioned living in Asia previously. Wouldn't that be about the cheapest place on the planet, and still provide access to food, spares, and people? But I guess has few opportunies to make money.
