Foul Weather Set in the Caribbean ?

Hi!
I will be sailing Janurary/February the Leewards and Windwards.

Since it's gonna be my first sailing there I am asking for your opinions whether I should bring my foul weather jacket and pants with me or not!

Thanks for your advice!
Cheers
Robert

Re: Foul weather set in the Caribbean?

Hi Robert.

I have been in the BVI a few times during that time frame. Its quite comfortable even in bad weather, but I would definitely recommend a decent coastal shell for rain and spray. I wore my shell with shorts and never got chills, but I am a native Chicagoan so results may vary. It can get a bit nippy at night during a blow though. Personally, I wouldnt pack the Musto Ocean foulies for that trip, but thats just me.

Are you night sailing?
Whats your passage plan?

Re: Foul weather set in the Caribbean?

Don't bother with foul weather gear. I have a cheap plastic raincoat for use in squalls, a light sweater for sailing at night and use my dive mask to keep visibility in high wind/rain.

Thanks to both of you for your answers!
@Patient: No, we are not planning night sailing. It will be a rather comfortable family trip Martinique-Grenada-Martinique-St. Martin! All that in easy 8 weeks. ;-)

I am usually sailing mediterran Sea, where you use Musto's more often ....

Re: Foul weather set in the Caribbean?

I have a lightweight Goretex parka that I sometimes use, but really, the rain squalls pass by quickly, so you don't need to take up luggage space with foulies.

I actually found a thin, longsleeve knit polypropylene shirt to be most useful, the kind sold in outdoor stores as "thermal underwear". It can get a little chilly standing at the wheel in a squall. You can also use it for snorkeling to keep the sun off your back.

Most visitors don't bother with special vaccinations, but here's a link you can check out...
