Just remember, someday your opinion may be in the minority. Trolls may rule the world!

Ralph, I won't name names but the initials are JS. I'll leave you to speculate. Many others have suffered the same so will know immediately who this is. He has even called people that I work for and tried to get me fired. Fortunately they know his reputation and totally ignore him. Chuck

Re: Forum trolls

Here's the part about some posters that I don't get. They respond to a "stupid" question by directing the OP to Google and disparaging them for asking others to "do their research". If the poster can't be bothered to help, then why take the time to post at all?

While I would not do that, I do understand. Many of us who have been here a long time have answered the same questions many times over. It can be frustrating when a newb shows up and asks those same questions yet again, without bothering to first check if they have already been asked. So directing someone to google, no. But asking people to use the forum search function before asking the same tired old questions, yes!

Re: Forum trolls

CaliforniaGirl,

The forum has a custom Google search feature. It's in the "Search" pull-down menu. For some topics, the poster would quickly find a huge amount of information in prior threads by using the custom search. They'd likely find answers much more quickly than waiting for responses in a new thread.

So suggesting that a poster use the Search function isn't a put-down, it's a helpful suggestion. There's nothing like a new thread for getting the latest info or advice, but there's a lot of good stuff in the archived threads, too.

Re: Forum trolls

Answering the same questions over and over again is just sort the nature of any forum, best if possible to give them a link to a thread and explain the Google search function.
Many of us just don't know any better, I first showed up in the forum about the time one of the Lithium battery threads started, I thought great I know quite a bit about different Lithium battery chemistries from Scuba scooters, model airplanes etc., never realizing that this thread I saw wasn't the first Lithium battery thread, and I'm sure I probably came out sounding stupid.

Finding the Google search feature was helpful to me, the regular search just didn't come up with much, someone explained the Google search to me, and that helped a lot.

Re: Forum trolls

So, you're starting from Sweden? If so, how much of the Baltic have you explored? I've heard it can take years to fully explore the Baltic (I've been following Dockhead's posts). So, if you really get to know the sea that's in your back yard, you should be super ready for that RTW. Really, from your first post it's not clear that the RTW is your intent. Either way, good luck!

Re: Forum trolls

On the topic of Forum Trolls, OP don't pay them any mind. I used to be a gamer and was both troller and trollee. While the practice of trolling is best left in the gaming community and dissapate with age, occasionally bad habits can be difficult to shed. For the most part, Trolls are harmless and are just trying to get a temporary rise out of their intended target. Either ignore/block them or feed them "a bit" to keep some laughs going. On the other hand it is NOT...EVER... acceptable to escalate into any form of harassment.

If you want to take a more active approach toward Forum Trolls, you can use various strategies that you can use**. Below are a couple helpful links to help guide your strategy:

1. Counter Trolling
2. White Knighting

** While these may all seem like viable solutions, the best way to deal with a troll is to live your life to the fullest and happiest extent you are able to attain Let the trolls rot under their bridge
